Rescue and Jessica: A Life-Changing Friendship | Patrick Downes, Jessica Kensky
22 posts | 23 read | 6 to read
Based on a real-life partnership, the heartening story of the love and teamwork between a girl and her service dog will illuminate and inspire. Rescue thought he'd grow up to be a Seeing Eye dog -- it's the family business, after all. When he gets the news that he's better suited to being a service dog, he's worried that he's not up to the task. Then he meets Jessica, a girl whose life is turning out differently than the way she'd imagined it, too. Now Jessica needs Rescue by her side to help her accomplish everyday tasks. And it turns out that Rescue can help Jessica see after all: a way forward, together, one step at a time. An endnote from the authors tells more about the training and extraordinary abilities of service dogs, particularly their real-life best friend and black lab, Rescue.

Jessica tells her story through her POV and that of her new service dog, who is determined to do well in his new role. It seemed like an accessible mode of storytelling for kids. I also thought it was interesting that Jessica left her injury cause out of the narrative, opening up more connections for kids with disabilities from a variety of causes. #DisabilitiesRep #ServiceDog #PictureBook

Based on the real-life friendship between Boston Marathon bombing survivor Jessica Kensky and her service dog Rescue.

Beautiful story and illustrations.

Grab tissues before you start this one.

Kenyazero This sounds like a beautiful read! 3y
DogMomIrene @Kenyazero Yes! They made the MC much younger than the real Jessica so kids could relate. The story really focuses on their relationship, though. Not the circumstances leading to it. 3y

Rescue & Jessica: A Life-Changing Friendship, is a book that touches my heart. The Boston Marathon bombing took place an hour from my hometown. Jessica was injured during it and eventually became a double amputee. She was given Rescue (a service dog) to help her learn how to live her new life. This is a beautiful story about a beautiful friendship and how they rescued each other ❤️ Warning: you may tear up! This is a B book, written by Jessica

giont Kensky and Patrick Downes, and illustrated by Scott Magoon. This is a New York Times bestseller and it also won the Schneider Family Book award! I would read this book as a RA during a social studies class talking about the Boston Marathon bombing. Students could also use it as an AS to learn more about Jessica and Patrick. ESOL strategies 4, 11, & 16 fit this book. Along with UDL principles 9.2, 3.1, & 3.2. http://scottmagoon.com/rescue-jessica 5y

Edenmonet Rescue & Jessica looks like such a great book! I feel that it‘s important for students to read book like this because it‘s exposes students to serious things that people go through, such as having a service dog. Also, there may even be a student with a service dog who can relate! 5y

Thank you Haley for reading and sharing this touching story. I was in Boston a couple of years after the bombing. I went to the finish line. It was surreal. This Schneider Family award winning biography was so touching! As you can see, my 🐕 Finn, at first wasn‘t interested but then, he liked it enough to nibble the corner. Dogs make lives better! Rescue makes Jessica‘s life better every day! #LAE3414sp19
