Playing with Matches
Playing with Matches: A Novel | Hannah Orenstein
In the tradition of Good in Bed and The Assistants comes a funny and smart comedy about a young matchmaker balancing her messy personal life and the demands of her eccentric clients. Sasha Goldberg has a lot going for her: a recent journalism degree from NYU, an apartment with her best friend Caroline, and a relationship that would be amazing if her finance-bro boyfriend Jonathan would ever look up from his BlackBerry. But when her dream career falls through, she uses her familys darkest secret to land a job as a matchmaker for New York Citys elite at the dating service Bliss. Despite her inexperience, Sasha throws herself into her new career, trolling for catches on Tinder, coaching her clients through rejection, and dishing out dating advice to people twice her age. She sets up a TV exec who wanted kids five years ago, a forty-year-old baseball-loving virgin, and a consultant with a rigorous five-page checklist for her ideal match. Sasha hopes to find her clients The One, like she did. But when Jonathan betrays her, she spirals out of controland right into the arms of a writer with a charming Southern drawl, who she had previously set up with one of her clients. Hes strictly off-limits, but with her relationship on the rocks, all bets are off. Fresh, sweet, and laugh-out-loud funny, Playing with Matches is the addictive story about dating in todays swipe-heavy society, and a young woman trying to find her own place in the world.

I was morbidly curious about whether the story could be redeemed, so I stuck with it. I oughtn't make that mistake again. My friends and I weren‘t even remotely so shallow and immature at Sasha‘s age and neither are my younger son and his friends, who are now roughly/were recently her age. Ick!

An enjoyable read. I found the behind the scenes of the matchmaking industry fascinating. And, some of the clients, I'm sure, are based on real life experiences. I wish there was a bit more development with the main character and her parents since their marriage and her childhood really shaped her. Fun and frothy which is what I needed for this latest heat wave.

This is a playfully titled story. It reminds me of the chick lit I used to read. Whether they stopped making books like these, or I stopped reading them, I‘m not sure. What I do know is I enjoyed it for what it was- a light, semi coming of age romp about a young girl named Sasha who lands the seemingly perfect job of professional matchmaker. But how can she help others if she can‘t even help herself? If you miss old school chick lit, read this.

Reading this one next. It‘s interesting. Littens seem to give it good reviews, but on Goodreads it‘s not doing so hot. Wonder where my opinion will fall?

mcipher I liked it a lot - it‘s classic chick lit, like the early days of my beloved Red Dress Ink. 1y
Purrfectpages @mcipher aw, Red Dress books. I haven‘t thought about them in forever. Looking forward to it! 1y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 I was initially drawn to this book because of the cover and title. Plus, the idea of reading about a matchmaker sounded highly entertaining. Throughout the book, I felt a roller coaster of emotions. I felt everything from laughing and cheering Sasha on to wanting to shake some sense into her. This is a quick and fun read that I´ll surely recommend to others. My only question is: will there be a sequel?! Because that ending... WOW!

“Hi, my name is #Edith and I totally didn‘t pee in the cat toy basket right in front of you earlier today!” 🙄 Sometimes cats are the worst. Especially when age then went ahead and played with a non-pee toy I was able to rescue.... #Chloe is getting ready to maybe slap her again here, too. 😆 #catsoflitsy

booksandsympathy Carts can be major pains in the ass, but they're cute and cuddly and make up for it. Lol. And they know it. 1y
readordierachel Cats have no remorse. They're lucky they're so fuzzy. 1y
Sace Omigosh! I *hate* when they look right at me and pee on something. Creeps. Dang their cute, cuddly, furry behinds. 1y
