Tolkien's Legendarium
Tolkien's Legendarium: Essays on The History of Middle-earth | Verlyn Flieger, Carl F. Hostetter
4 posts | 1 read | 4 to read
When J.R.R. Tolkien died in 1973, he left behind a vast body of unpublished material related to the imaginary world of his fiction. Now arranged edited and published as The History of Middle-earth by his son and literary executor, Christopher Tolkien, these 12 volumes offer an unparalleled insight into the growth of Tolkien's mythology over five decades. This book is the first comprehensive critical examination of The History of Middle-earth. An opening easy by Rayner Unwin, Tolkien's publisher for many years, discusses the publication history of the material, while essays by expert contributors examine a broad range of topics related to the work.

Pickpick

This is an intensely (and sometimes overwhelmingly) scholarly collection of essays written to celebrate the completion of the History of Middle-earth in 2000. Ranging over the whole linguistic, literary and historical landscape of Tolkien's world it delves deep into its themes and construction. Strictly for the serious Tolkien reader it gives me a glow of joy to see how much it means to others. Image is Ted Nasmith's At Lake Cuiviénen

Moray_Reads You might want to try this one @jazzfeathers, if you haven't already. I've been trying to get hold of it for years and eventually signed up to Questia for a month to get access! 6y
Daisey You have been posting some very interesting Tolkien books lately. I think this one‘s going on my list. 6y
Moray_Reads @Daisey it's really difficult to get hold of and costs a fortune in hard copy so I paid $19.99 for a months membership at Questia for it, they've got quite a few Tolkien-related books so it will definitely be worth the money for the more obscure ones 6y

Moray_Reads @Heideschrampf the scholarship is seriously impressive, so much detail and analysis of tiny portions! 6y
Heideschrampf @Moray_Reads exactly! Only a true fandom would not just produce merchandise, but serious scientific studies. Nerds are awesome! 🤓 6y
JazzFeathers Goes in my wanted list 😀 Thanks so much for mentioning it. I don't think l've ever heard of it. 6y
