Knowing what was to come made this a challenging read. It was interesting to learn more about Dietrich Bonhoeffer‘s family, beliefs and theological writings. Reading the horrors of the Third Reich never gets easier. It was enlightening to learn about the resistance and disheartening to realize that their plots failed so the regime did not fall sooner. Bonhoeffer‘s impact on Christian theology and a believer‘s place in the world is undeniable. 4⭐️s

Jonathanw That was a good read, just got “Letters from Prison”. Next in the read list. I heard the original biography by his long time friend Bethge. Is even better read. 2y
Honeybeebooks I am definitely interested in reading some of Bonhoeffer‘s works. I might need to tackle the biography by Bethge too. 2y

This was a very long book. I say it‘s a pick due to all the information that‘s in it. The book is repetitive at times-sometimes verbatim. Also, Metaxas seemed to tell a lot about other people and had a lot of educated guesses as to what Bonhoeffer might have thought. I‘m glad I listened to it, but I am more glad that it is done.

Daisey Someday I will probably listen to this, but I‘m not in any real rush. If you want a short to the point biography, I really enjoyed this YA one. 5y
Laura317 @Daisey I‘ll check that out later. Thanks! 5y
JCPaulk Fabulous book about a great human being. 5y
Jonathanw Try reading the original Biography by ehberhard Bethgee. 2y

Bonhoeffer was someone I had heard about, but never realized how much he did, or attempted to do. I am excited to learn about this man.

Crazeedi He was a true hero 5y
Daisey I've read/listened to some shorter things about him, but someday I am going to listen to this one. Looking forward to seeing what you think. 5y
Laura317 @Crazeedi Yes he was! @Daisey I will let you know how it is. It‘s a looooong one! 5y
Libby1 I adore Bonhoeffer but I‘ve avoided this one as I‘m not a fan of Metaxas. Bonhoeffer was my wannabe boyfriend in college! 💔 5y
Laura317 @Libby1 I don‘t really know anything about Metaxas. I just heard this version is supposed to be translated from original German. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 5y

An absolutely inspiring yet heart wrenching account of one of the world‘s greatest theologians. I can‘t wait to dig more into his writings.

Inspiring testament to the theologian‘s life and legacy. I listened to it while on a road trip, and I think I would have had some suggestions to edit for relevance/pithiness if I were reading, but the subject matter is interesting enough that the underdeveloped tangents weren‘t frustrating.

There's a great story here I'm sure but this one seems to be aimed at the student of religious doctrine rather than the general reader.

Amazing biography. Where is America's Bonhoeffer right now?

I have so many non-fiction books that I love but I decided to use this one for this post! I read this last year and it was really inspiring how from the beginning Bonhoeffer never compromised with the Nazis, how ardently he believed his faith meant it was his responsibility to fight for the oppressed. I'm reading it again to motivate me to action and courage in all aspects in my life. #nonfictionlove #17booklove

saresmoore ❤️ Bonhoeffer & what a timely influence! 7y
Kimzey Yes, this was a good one! And ripe for a reread - thanks! 7y
EllieDottie @saresmoore I know! His courage motivates me! 7y

I try very hard to keep politics out of my posts here, and that is in part because I've not been reading anything political recently. I have however been watching the news, and I'm absolutely heartbroken over all of it...literally ALL OF IT. What's my point? I don't really have one....read up on Bonhoeffer though. #resist

NerdyRev As a Lutheran *cough* liberal *cough* pastor, I concur. Any chance to read Bonhoeffer is worth it. 7y

I tend to think I stumble across certain parts in books at JUST the right moment in time for me. Does that ever happen to any of you? Anyways, read this and realized that tomorrow is inauguration day.😔

Elephantango A book can have such magical powers! It can find you when you need it most. 7y
Libby1 I love Dietrich Bonhoeffer but Eric Metaxas - not so much. I hope you enjoy it! 7y
kricheal @Libby1 I've never read anything else by him, but I was very drawn to Bonhoeffer's story. I didn't know much about him before this. I want to read some of HIS work though after this. What is it that you don't like about Metaxas? 7y
Libby1 I need to check the details again but in the interview I read he seemed to be a Trump apologist. 😞 7y

I read Mein Kampf several years ago after I watched a history channel special about him. Maybe Rise and fall of third Reich? IDK... anyways. They were doing a national celebration of his birthday and women were screaming and fainting like the Beatles had come to America for the first time. I couldn't believe it! So I felt like I needed to understand WHY they were acting like that... so I bought MK...and wow he wrote it in the 1920's

kricheal It lays out exactly what he wants to do and HE DID IT. The only thing is no one took him serious🤔🤔🤔. It's a sickening book, it's one of only two books that have ever given me nightmares. I bet no one can guess the other one...one hint it was made into a movie within the last 10 years 7y
Scurvygirl MK was the ONLY book my ex read and kept in our bathroom... he's an ex for very good reasons. Very disturbing individual. 7y
kricheal @Scurvygirl Your ex and my ex sound like similar minds. He would always lie on social media about books that he had "read" specifically american nonfiction..like hundreds of them...all the while nudging me to read them so we could talk about them and compare notes. Mainly he just listened to my reviews on them. It wasn't until after I read MK and he of course said he read it too even though he said he only read while I wasn't around(?) after I gave him my detailed thoughts on it he posted a link to his book review blog on some political fb post that he was arguing with people on. When I clicked on the link cause I had never read his reviews before I was horrified. They were all my words verbatim! I was livid to say the least. Since then I've become extremely 7y

kricheal Guarded with my reviews. I'll tend to say if I love, like, hate etc... but I've really had a hard time opening up with giving lengthy passionate reviews. I felt so burned by that. Exs are Exs for a reason 7y
Scurvygirl @kricheal oof! Wondering about that other book? 7y
kricheal @Scurvygirl MK was the one that exposed it for me. 7y

#overthis @lemonlime799 #currentlyreading I don't know how anyone can look at Trump and not see the similarities with Hitler. It's a scary time we're living in.

queerbookreader Maybe they do see the similarities but don't care? Which is even scarier to think about 7y

How do we know that dying is so dreadful? Who knows whether, in our human fear and anguish we are only shivering and shuddering at the most glorious, heavenly, blessed event in the world? Death is hell and night and cold, if it is not transformed by our faith. But that is just what is so marvelous, that we can transform death.

Thought I should read this since I once acted in a play about his life. It's particularly interesting in light of many stories of WW2 resistance I've read lately.

Nebklvr Have read his "disciple" book and another but not the biography. How is it? 8y

I wish the author would have been able to put Bornhoeffer's life and acts into the context of the time w/o veering off constantly and excessively into a separate book about Nazi Germany in general.
I gave up a little more than half way through.
