The Plot to Kill Hitler
The Plot to Kill Hitler: Dietrich Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Spy, Unlikely Hero | Patricia McCormick
6 posts | 5 read | 6 to read
Perfect for fans of suspenseful nonfiction such as books by Steve Sheinkin, this is a page-turning narrative about Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a pastor and pacifist who became an unlikely hero during World War II and took part in a plot to kill Hitler. Written by two-time National Book Award finalist Patricia McCormick, author of Sold and Never Fall Down and coauthor of the young readers edition of I Am Malala. It was April 5, 1943, and the Gestapo would arrive any minute. Dietrich Bonhoeffer had been expecting this day for a long time. He had put his papers in orderand left a few notes specifically for Hitlers men to see. Two SS agents climbed the stairs and told the boyish-looking Bonhoeffer to come with them. He calmly said good-bye to his parents, put his Bible under his arm, and left. Upstairs there was proof, in his own handwriting, that this quiet young minister was part of a conspiracy to kill Adolf Hitler. This compelling, brilliantly researched account includes the remarkable discovery that Bonhoeffer was one of the first people to provide evidence to the Allies that Jews were being deported to death camps. It takes readers from his privileged early childhood to the studies and travel that would introduce him to peace activists around the worldeventually putting this gentle, scholarly pacifist on a deadly course to assassinate one of the most ruthless dictators in history. The Plot to Kill Hitler provides fascinating insights into what makes someone stand up for whats right when no one else is standing with you. It is a question that every generation must answer again and again. With black-and-white photographs, fascinating sidebars, and thoroughly researched details, this book should be essential reading.

The plot to kill Hitler wasn't what I expected, but I still love it.
It about a pastor named Dietrich Bonhoffer, and what he went through from the day the war started to the day it ended. Every chapter it would tell you what happened in that year.
If you need some ideas for the writing assignment please read this book.

I love the history behind world war 2 and all its events, so I got into this book expecting an interesting story. It starts off pretty strong with a cool backstory to the main character but once he starts to grow up it all falls downhill for me. The pacing becomes very slow and most of the information becomes very boring and dragged out. I tried to stick with the book but after a while it became just tiresome, I wouldn't recommend this book.

In April 1943,Hitlers power began to affect everyone, including the unlikeliest man.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a scholar and a pacifist. But with the start of WWII threatening his friends and family Bonhoeffer must choose either his religion or the freedom of his fellow man.
If you like war, history and in depth topics this book is one to read. McCormick‘s research and understanding shines through the memoir of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, an unlikely hero.

MissYaremcio I really like the summary you gave of this book! One thing to note for the future; tone is not necessarily captured by research, tone is how this research is portrayed by the author. Great work! 5y

I don‘t particularly consider myself a mood reader, but maybe I should. I‘ve had this book on my TBR almost exactly a year since picking it up at a school book fair, but today I finally opened it and read it straight through.

It is a fascinating true story of a man who stood by his principles and stayed in Germany to work against Hitler even when he had opportunities to leave and knew staying might cost him everything.

Crazeedi Bonhoeffer was a true hero at a time when you were in mortal danger. And he paid the price. A great man have you read this one 5y
Daisey @Crazeedi That one is on my list too! It‘s just a bit more of a commitment than this one written for younger readers. 5y
Crazeedi @Daisey oh yes it is a definite commitment 😁 5y

Spring book fair class library book haul! I picked up some of these and my principal donated the others. I'm really excited about a few of the books in this stack, but I'm hoping my students snap them up before I get a chance to read them! Except for the tagged book, I might just take it home with me tonight.

I never get tired of learning more about WWII. McCormick does a great job of bringing Dietrich Bonhoeffer's story to life for middle grade readers.
