The Real Doctor Will See You Shortly
The Real Doctor Will See You Shortly: A Physician's First Year | Matt McCarthy
17 posts | 14 read | 29 to read
In medical school, Matt McCarthy dreamed of being a different kind of doctorthe sort of mythical, unflappable physician who could reach unreachable patients. But when a new admission to the critical care unit almost died his first night on call, he found himself scrambling. Visions of mastery quickly gave way to hopes of simply surviving hospital life, where confidence was hard to come by and no amount of med school training could dispel the terror of facing actual patients. This funny, candid memoir of McCarthys intern year at a New York hospital provides a scorchingly frank look at how doctors are made, taking readers into patients rooms and doctors conferences to witness a physician's journey from ineptitude to competence. McCarthy's one stroke of luck paired him with a brilliant second-year adviser he called Baio (owing to his resemblance to the Charles in Charge star), who proved to be a remarkable teacher with a wicked sense of humor. McCarthy would learn even more from the people he cared for, including a man named Benny, who was living in the hospital for months at a time awaiting a heart transplant. But no teacher could help McCarthy when an accident put his own health at risk, and showed him all too painfully the thin line between doctor and patient. The Real Doctor Will See You Shortly offers a window on to hospital life that dispenses with sanctimony and self-seriousness while emphasizing the black-comic paradox of becoming a doctor: How do you learn to save lives in a job where there is no practice? From the Hardcover edition.

I‘m a sucker for a good physician memoir, and this hit the spot of what I was in the mood for this afternoon! Matt didn‘t quite feel prepared for the realities of life as an intern on the first day of his internal medicine residency, but with curiosity, determination, and heart, he found his rhythm as a doctor. If you enjoyed This Is Going to Hurt by Adam Kay, give Matt‘s memoir a shot. 💉🩺

Non fiction. I very much enjoyed this book. A fantastic insight into an interns first year and what they go through. I really liked Matt's writing style - I felt invested in his patients successes.

Pretty interesting, well-written account of a year in the life of a medical intern. I enjoyed the specific focus on the patients Dr. McCarthy really connected with, and the touches of humor added by his interactions with other medical personnel. Baio is more like Bae-o, am I right? 😍

Slow at times, but often laughs-out-loud hilarious and insightful. McCarthy's vulnerability balances out his humor. Perfect for fans of Grey's Anatomy or those interested in medicine in general. 4/5

This title, to me, suggested humor. Although there were a few funny moments I wouldn't in any way consider this a comedy. Matt McCarthy describes his first year residency at Mass General in touching detail. This book is similar to many other doctors in training memoirs and I enjoy them all.

Dolly @SaraFair No! It sounds really good. It's a definite for my TBR. Thanks! 7y

Short, humorous stories. The reader doesn't need medical experience to understand this book. It could be for anyone trying something new and scary. I've been an icu nurse for 17 years. I think it would have been a better fit for me if I could relate as a newer nurse I am so far removed from those days, I can barely remember.

Good read. Author not afraid to let the reader know he's not flawless. And personally very self-affirming re: no desire to ever be a physician.

I don't have any desire to be a doctor, but if I did, I think vomit would be my downfall.
Anyone else have an opinion?

CherylDeFranceschi I'm with you on vomit! 8y

Megabooks Pus. I just hate abscesses. Especially cat or rabbit abscesses. 8y
Swivelgal Blood. You lost me at blood. Or maybe it was fluid. Yeah...probably fluid. And skin creeps me out. So does touching people. Do you that would be a problem? 😇 8y
Viji I'm a nurse. Blood, pus and diarrhea don't bother me. Don't like the sound of people hacking up and spitting out sputum 😟 8y
