How to Lie with Statistics
How to Lie with Statistics | Darrell Huff
11 posts | 9 read | 24 to read
Over Half a Million Copies Sold--an Honest-to-Goodness Bestseller Darrell Huff runs the gamut of every popularly used type of statistic, probes such things as the sample study, the tabulation method, the interview technique, or the way the results are derived from the figures, and points up the countless number of dodges which are used to full rather than to inform.

Only when there is a substantial number of trials involved is the law of averages a useful description or prediction.

Still relevant. Interesting.

Written over 60 years ago, this is still a highly relevant book that exposes the many flaws in statistics and how easy it is to manipulate findings. A short book that everyone should read.

rachelm But you know, you gave them homes! 7y
TheLibrarian I'm right there with you. 7y
2BR02B @rachelm Yeah, and they don't even need to worry about their pages getting rumpled or their spines cracked, since they'll be shelved indefinitely. 😅 7y

TheLibrarian @2BR02B We really do! Tried talking myself out of the bookstore today but when I drove by a space was available right out front. It was calling to me and I obviously had to buy a book. 7y

No lies here!!! I joined Litsy back in June and it shows, especially in the number of ebooks I have checked out from the library since then.

Marchpane 👏🏻👏🏻Looks great! Love that you added the audio/ebook split 📊📈📉 7y
carys14 @Marchpane I had a strong feeling that was where the impact was but I didn't realize that it had been that much of an impact in my ebook checkouts! 7y

...whatever an intelligence test measures, it is not quite the same thing as we usually mean by intelligence. It neglects such important things as leadership and creative imagination. It takes no account of social judgement or musical or artistic or other aptitudes, to say nothing of such personality matters as diligence and emotional balance.

So this was written in the 1950s and it is very interesting to read the author's reflections on events of the time as he describes how averages, charts, percentages, etc., are often very wrong unintentionally or intentionally. As he says in the book "the crooks already know these tricks; honest men must learn them in self-defense (11)". This seems particularly timely now. #24in48 #readathon

Really enjoying everyone's June stats! I am trying to cram in the last 100+ pages of reading to meet my goals. So close...

BookishFeminist I'm doing the same thing- trying to finish my current read before I post tomorrow! 8y
StaceyKondla Since this is my first month with Litsy, I didn't know about posting stats - I'm definitely keeping track for July 😊 8y
Pandyfish @StaceyKondla me too! What's a good reading goal for one month? 8y
