A new investigation threatens to unearth skeletons from Rebus' past Rebus' retirement is disrupted once again when skeletal remains are identified as a private investigator who went missing over a decade earlier. The remains, found in a rusted car in the East Lothian woods, not far from Edinburgh, quickly turn into a cold case murder investigation. Rebus' old friend, Siobhan Clarke is assigned to the case, but neither of them could have predicted what buried secrets the investigation will uncover. Rebus remembers the original case--a shady land deal--all too well. After the investigation stalled, the family of the missing man complained that there was a police cover-up. As Clarke and her team investigate the cold case murder, she soon learns a different side of her mentor, a side he would prefer to keep in the past. A gripping story of corruption and consequences, this new novel demonstrates that Rankin and Rebus are still at the top of their game.

Part of my reading weekend included a trip to the pub which seemed perfect for my latest trip into the dark world of Edinburgh crime with the wonderful John Rebus. Here a body is found in abandoned car and it soon is clear that the victim disappeared in 2006 when rebus was part of the investigation. More secrets and lies emerge especially when big ger cafferty is involved. The usual great storytelling, perfect with a pint.

Another fine novel from Mr Rankin. I enjoyed seeing Rebus and Clarke AND Fox working together. Stayed up late to finish this one.

A CD was playing quietly on the Saab's antiquated sound system, not Arvo Pärt this time but Brian Eno, another gift from Deborah Quant to help his 'mindfulness'. When she'd explained the concept to him, he'd argued that it was something he'd always done, that it used to be known simply as 'thinking'.

‘How are you, Siobhan?‘ She nodded in the affirmative.
‘How about you, Malcolm?‘ He nodded back before turning towards Rebus.
‘I went to the Oxford Bar first off, but they said they hardly see you these days. I‘m at the age where nothing should surprise me, but I‘ll admit that nearly took my legs from under me.‘
‘Aye, they‘ve had to announce a profits warning....

Finished my first Ian Rankin thriller In a House of Lies. For me nothing beats a good mystery. I shall have to go back and read about John Rebus as a young cop! I like his character.
Now to start my pick for the Oz Litsy postal markup group. @LapReader @thegreensofa @Sarz The Weight of Ink... set in London 1660 #historicalfiction

Rebus is iconic to me. Rankin writes real people and real problems. At this point Rebus is retired, but he still tries to work his way into investigations. He‘s slowly being phased out, through technology and his sometimes shady tactics. This becomes even more apparent when a body shows up and leads to a look at an investigation he was part of years ago. Was it done properly? Or were there too many cut corners?

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I have long enjoyed the Rebus novels but certainly have not read them in order or straight through, dipping in and out when I want a dose of Scotish murder. This is the latest and although Rebus is retired he is called back in to aid Sioban and Fox on a couple of cold cases. Rebus has not mellowed despite COPD and a more abstemious attitude to alcohol. Cafferty and the old foes are in evidence. Excellent narrator- recommended as always!

Fine way to start off the new year! The latest Rebus does not disappoint; just curled up and let the latest play out. Siobhan is growing into her own, Fox makes an appearance, corruption and betrayal as past and current murders intertwine. Comes down to family, all so different yet the same. Rebus teaches what to fight for and what to let go. Totally satisfying and made me think what family is for me.

Rkcmktg Can not put it down...how did I not know of him before this book?! Feels like I‘d better get to library and start from “beginning” with his characters. Hubby is a detective and I read each page with a real life Clarke, Sutherland, Fox and Rebus in my mind 😳 5y
Tonton @Rkcmktg I love cranky Rebus、you‘ll have a grand time starting from the beginning❣️and there is a tv series too (edited) 5y

Second last day in SAN Francisco. Devastating fires have lead to huge loss of property and lives. Smoke filled city has meant we have restricted our time outside . So lots of reading inside. I enjoyed this book. I‘ve read all his Rebus books and can hear the TV character in my head as I read. Start on way home tomorrow evening. Will be very glad to be home. 😍

This has the same atmosphere and pace of other Rebus novels but. Felt this was more of a police procedural about corruption within a Police force and less about the actual crime itself. While it‘s still a good read, it felt like the winding down of Rebus and didn‘t engage me as much.

I would like to thank the Author/the Publishers/NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for a fair and honest review

“‘The cops at the time looked into it but didn‘t get far.‘ Ness broke off as his burger arrived. He picked it up and took a bite. He was still chewing as the drinks appeared. ‘Help yourselves to a sweet potato fry,‘ he offered.”....not sure about this one yet..seems to be more about police corruption than mystery/thriller
