Sister Mother Husband Dog
Sister Mother Husband Dog: (Etc.) | Delia Ephron
13 posts | 9 read | 17 to read
Bestselling author Delia Ephron shares a deeply personal collection of stories and essays, anchored by a loving remembrance of her sister Nora. In Sister Mother Husband Dog, Delia Ephron brings her trademark wit and effervescent prose to a series of autobiographical essays about life, love, sisterhood, movies, and family. In Losing Nora, she deftly captures the rivalry, mutual respect, and intimacy that made up her relationship with her older sister and frequent writing companion. Other essays run the gamut from a humorous piece about love and the movieshow one romantic comedy completely destroyed her twentiesto the joy of girl friends and best friendship, the magical madness and miracle of dogs, keen-eyed observations about urban survival, and a serious and affecting memoir of life with her mother and growing up the child of alcoholics. Ephrons eloquent style and voice illuminate every page of this superb and singular work.

Nora & Delia Ephron were sisters, collaborators, and most importantly, close friends. This book of essays/memoir stays with me. ❤️

Loved this book ! A series of essays about her sister's death, friendships, dogs, family, movie business, writing- so much else.
In an essay entitled "Why I Can't Write about My Mother" she discusses the effect growing up as a child of alcoholics, whose mother admonishes, I hope you never tell anyone what happens here." In other essays she is witty about her hair, her dad's constant phoning,-serious, moving, lighthearted, made me laugh & cry.

Essays on love, loss and longing, bookended by essays about her sister and co-writer Nora Ephron. Honest, funny voice with a powerful essay about growing up as the child of alcoholics that particularly stood out. And I'm a fan of this edition's text-only cover - such a great design decision. #nonfictionNovember
