If not audiobook I might have bailed. Only as audiobook it‘s a “Pick” – not for the quite large, dragging middle part telling political structures and intrigues but for Walther and his company. In the end all is so well told that I‘m willing to believe it could have been like that. The last 4-5 hours were gripping and I wished Friedrich‘s overthrow of government was told a bit more detailed.

Overall the tale‘s weakness is the imbalance of focus.

I know, it‘s no competition but in a way it feels really good to have the number of hours left “heard down” to one digit numbers.

I still like this one – but still for the main characters and not so much for the political background. It‘s not that it‘s boring. It just seems to me that it‘s draggingly told. It took me a while to even get a faint understanding of the historical background. (I‘m sure I didn‘t learn this at school.)

And all the princes, rulers and bishops make it even more difficult to understand everything completely.

Concentrated listening necessary.

💏 togetherness with my significant other. Baking together. Him surprising me with yummy witloof salad (with banana 🍌 instead of apple 🍎 – which was intended as a makeshift solution but worked out _so_great_)

It‘s hard for me to find three things …

🎚 I was grateful for it being Good Friday yesterday so I could take it all slow

☀️ Also grateful for that warm weather allowing me to go shopping for coffee and Leffe 🍻 in Luxemburg 🇱🇺 in short sleeves

🥔🥚 Especially grateful for my significant other cooking us potatoes with mustard egg-sauce (Yummy 😋)

I still like this one – but more for Judith, Irene, Walther and the sly Stefan than for the historical background.

Man, feels like I‘m checking more of this “Welfen-versus-Stauffen”-stuff than I can ever understand. It seems so complicated. And they are all named alike. “Otto”, “Friedrich” and maybe more “Heinrich” than I have fingers …

I‘m not sure whether we skipped that in school or whether I simply didn‘t pay attention.

Forgot to post yesterday.

But yesterday I was grateful for

🎚 the prospect of Good Friday

🙂 my physiotherapist already being in Easter vacation so that I had an afternoon off

☀️ Warm temperatures in early evening that allowed me to go shopping by feet 🦶and without coat – and the grabbag of crisps I cheated in between my shopped goods

I am one of those who reads a bit about the background of the books I read – especially if it‘s historical fiction.

And so I was very surprised to learn that really few is verified about Walther‘s life:

Now that I finally made it to take a bigger bite from this one, I really like it. I am four hours in which makes 12.5% of the whole audiobook.

But I think that compared to the book the audiobook really was the better choice. The alternate perspectives are read by different people – plus it‘s a bit easier to rewind if I don‘t catch the political situation at first hearing.

💤 Flexitime. Today I absolutely couldn‘t bring myself to get up at 5 o‘clock in the morning.

👩🏽‍💻 That it was relatively quiet at work and that I had a satisfying moment of success before the next “kicker” landed on my desk 🙄

☀️ For the time to have a power nap on the balcony and finally having the opportunity to really listen to my new, very long audiobook

📱 For the chitchat about SF-books with a friend whom I haven‘t talked to for weeks. Our conversation via mobile phone came out of nowhere – but just feels great

Look, what audio-chunkster I chose next. My online library says it will play for one day, eight hours and a little bit. I‘m really curious if I will manage to finish it in the two weeks that I now borrowed it for.

It‘s a (fictional) story about Walter von der Vogelweide. Someone I don‘t know more of then “middle ages” and “singer”.

The one book I have read by Tanja Kinkel dragged a bit for me. That‘s why am curious how this audiobook will do.
