In Amanda Skenandores provocative and profoundly moving debut, set in the tragic intersection between white and Native American culture, a young girl learns about friendship, betrayal, and the sacrifices made in the name of belonging. On a quiet Philadelphia morning in 1906, a newspaper headline catapults Alma Mitchell back to her past. A federal agent is dead, and the murder suspect is Almas childhood friend, Harry Muskrat. Harryor Asku, as Alma knew himwas the most promising student at the savage-taming boarding school run by her father, where Alma was the only white pupil. Created in the wake of the Indian Wars, the Stover School was intended to assimilate the children of neighboring reservations. Instead, it robbed them of everything theyd knownlanguage, customs, even their namesand left a heartbreaking legacy in its wake. The bright, courageous boy Alma knew could never have murdered anyone. But she barely recognizes the man Asku has become, cold and embittered at being an outcast in the white world and a ghost in his own. Her lawyer husband, Stewart, reluctantly agrees to help defend Asku for Almas sake. To do so, Alma must revisit the painful secrets she has kept hidden from everyoneespecially Stewart. Told in compelling narratives that alternate between Almas childhood and her present life, Between Earth and Sky is a haunting and complex story of love and loss, as a quest for justice becomes a journey toward understanding and, ultimately, atonement.

This is a historical fiction piece based in the late 1800s of a white girl Alma who grew up at the boarding school for Native Americans her father opened. Alma finds herself torn between the two cultures, and finding herself questioning everything. Very well written.

A fascinating book diving into the history of assimilation schools for Native Americans around the turn of the century. Alternately entertaining and challenging, romantic and practical. I enjoyed the level of detail and immersion into the native culture. The writing isn‘t fantastic but is good enough. I‘m thankful for the reminder that no culture needs to rescue another culture and society‘s “progress” is not wholly positive.

Since it‘s the last day of June, I‘m pretty sure I‘m not going to be finishing anymore books this month so here is my June Read list. I couldn‘t choose a favorite so the tagged book is the first one I finished.

This book follows Alma going from her past as a white child in an assimilation boarding school to the present (1906) where one of her childhood friends, Henry (or Asku), is charged w/the murder of a fed agent.

The story is really about Alma coming to terms with what happened during her time at the boarding house and the treatment of Native Americans.

It wasn't always a comfortable read but it was enlightening and heartfelt.

Not always easy to read but I really enjoyed this moving & compelling historical novel set in the 1890s & 1906. Abyoung woman gets her lawyer husband to try & help her childhood friend, a Native American man on trial for murder. Told in past & present, around a boarding school created to assimilate NA children into white culture--tragic history I knew little about. With 3 Sisters Succotash & wild rice for my book tour review & GIVEAWAY. Link👇🏻

#ReadingResolutions #FictionFriday

Ending my Friday evening with some historical fiction based around the effects of the attempted assimilation of Native American children into white American culture in the late 1800s. I'm starting it tonight as I'm on a blog book tour for it next week. I have a feeling this will be a tough, sad read so I'm fortifying my soul with Tim Tams & Honeybush Caramel Tea. 😥 #wildfridaynight

A remarkably poignant, slow paced novel about the tragic attempts to assimilate Native American children from the 1880s through the beginning of the 20th century. Highly recommend to any American Historical Fiction fans out there. This one will stick with me for a while. 😪

While slow in places, this book ultimately surprised me with its poignance. This is the story of Alma, a white girl, told in alternating chapters of her life from ages 7 to 32. She spent 7-17 (1881-91) growing up in her missionary father‘s off-reservation boarding school for Indian children. It‘s a story of friendships and first love, of heartache/heartbreak, and of damage and loss caused by “assimilation.” There will be tears. Highly recommend.
