The Very Worst Missionary
The Very Worst Missionary: A Memoir or Whatever | Jamie Wright
18 posts | 14 read | 21 to read
The reason you love Jamie (or are about to) is because she says exactly what the rest of us are thinking, but were too afraid to upset the apple cart. She is a voice for the outlier, and were famished for what she has to say. --Jen Hatmaker, New York Times bestselling author of Of Mess and Moxie and For the Love Wildly popular blogger "Jamie the Very Worst Missionary" delivers a searing, offbeat, often hilarious memoir of spiritual disintegration and re-formation. As a quirky Jewish kid and promiscuous punkass teen, Jamie Wright never imagines becoming a Christian, let alone a Christian missionary. She is barely an adult when the trials of motherhood and marriage put her on an unexpected collision course with Jesus. After finding her faith at a suburban megachurch, Jamie trades in the easy life on the cul-de-sac for the green fields of Costa Rica. There, along with her family, she earnestly hopes to serve God and change lives. But faced with a yawning culture gap and persistent shortcomings in herself and her fellow workers, she soon loses confidence in the missionary enterprise and falls into a funk of cynicism and despair. Nearly paralyzed by depression, yet still wanting to make a difference, she decides to tell the whole, disenchanted truth: Missionaries suck and our work makes no sense at all! From her sofa in Central America, she launches a renegade blog, Jamie the Very Worst Missionary, and against all odds wins a large and passionate following. Which leads her to see that maybe a "bad" missionary--awkward, doubtful, and vocalis exactly what the world and the throngs of American do-gooders need. The Very Worst Missionary is a disarming, ultimately inspiring spiritual memoir for well-intentioned contrarians everywhere. It will appeal to readers of Nadia Bolz-Weber, Jen Hatmaker, Ann Lamott, Jana Reiss, Mallory Ortberg, and Rachel Held Evans.

Enjoying this one quite a bit. Wright's story is interesting and I like her snarky tone.

I was skeptical after the other white Christian Evangelical women‘s books I‘ve recently read. But this was a refreshing critique of the Christian Missionary Machine. #audiobook

Jamie made a bunch of templates of these for sharing purposes on her FB. Check out her page for the full post. bit.ly/2O5ea50

“You can love Jesus and call bullshit on your president.
You can love Jesus and call bullshit on your parents.
You can love Jesus and call bullshit on your pastor.
It‘s allowed.
If you are a Christian who sees other Christians behaving badly, you are allowed to stand up and say, “I love Jesus, but fuck that shit.”

CarolynM Love it. Everyone needs to be free to decide for themselves what is consistent with their faith or system of values. No-one else should decide this for you. 6y

Book could be unnecessarily crude at times but it is who she is. I thought often about bailing early on but stuck with it and it got better near the end. Thought provoking and interesting.

Gina That reminds me of thus book. There are only a handful of books I just could not finish and tjus one one the prize. I just disliked the writer. To selfish and a braggart to boot. 6y

When your hold for TVWM becomes available the day after you finish Things Fall Apart. I think that‘s what church ppl call A Word From The Lord™️ 😂 #ISwear #HeatOfJuly #DeweyJuly #Readathon

I can relate so much with this having worked for a Christian non-profit in Budapest for a year. I think she said things how they needed to be said and it was something I needed to listen to.

Jamie Wright never thought she would call herself a Christian, let alone become a missionary. Life doesn't always give you what you expect though. In this memoir, full of snark and sarcasm, Wright explores her faith and her path to a different perspective on how churches approach missionary work. Her snark and irreverence may not be for everyone, but it really worked for me.

Yes I finished this #audiobook in one day. (It's only about 5 hours.) Such an unexpected delight!!! If you have ever questioned your faith read this book. (Read it even if you haven't.) It is not preachy. It's honest and real.

JamieArc Is this based off of a blog? I seem to remember a blog called something like Jamie the worst missionary... 6y
Lmstraubie @JamieArc I know she kept a blog of the same name, but I don't know if the blog posts were used to create the book. 6y

I picked this book because I needed a "V" book for my #litsyatoz challenge. I didn't know anything about it. I am LOVING IT!!!!

BiblioTori I read what it was about and shelved this to read it. Suddenly I have a new top TBR! 😂 6y
Lmstraubie @OnlyMeJustT I have to admit I have struggled with my faith for a very long time. This book is the voice I needed to hear. It's not preachy in the least. It's real. 6y

“You can sleep when you are dead.”

This was said to me when my youngest was a newborn and I had three children under 4. Literally, the WORST thing you can say to someone with a baby😂.

Texreader No kidding!! Oh those days were so miserable 6y
MarriedtoMrT Ugh. And if don‘t get enough sleep you will die. Or at least get really ill. 6y
