Woe to Live On: A Novel | Daniel Woodrell
6 posts | 4 read | 1 to read
Set in the border states of Kansas and Missouri, WOE TO LIVE ON explores the nature of lawlessness and violence, friendship and loyalty, through the eyes of young recruit Jake Roedel. Where he and his fellow First Kansas Irregulars go, no one is safe, no one can be neutral. Roedel grows up fast, experiencing a brutal parody of war without standards or mercy. But as friends fall and families flee, he questions his loyalties and becomes an outsider even to those who have become outlaws.

"Is it possible for a man to retain his humanity in an inhuman time, and if not, at least to regain that humanity after a war ends?"

Not sure if it's the style of dialogue, the lack of understanding the plot, or the alcohol I drank while reading but I can't follow this book. Halfway through and I have no idea what's going on and I can't keep track of the characters. Giving up and moving on.

While in the library last week I decided to continue my practice of checking out a book working my way backwards alphabetically through the shelves. This shelf was mostly full of books by Stuart Woods (read one of his on the last shelf, can't read anymore) and Sherryl Woods. Those didn't appeal to me either. Found 2 books by Daniel Woodrell and selected this one. Loved Winter's Bone. Plus, it will fit some reading challenge categories.

christineandbooks Your method reminds me of mine when I was a child/teen! I would pick one end of the stacks and just look at the books until I found several that looked interesting enough to check out. Then next time I'd pick up where I'd left off and keep moving through the stacks. Fun way to discover new books pre-internet and pre-Litsy! 7y
Beckys_Books @christineandbooks I do this because I feel I neglect the stacks in favor of new releases. There's a lot of good books in there I haven't read yet! 7y
MicheleinPhilly What a fun practice! I'm sure you're going to find some real gems! 7y

Don't go into the library...Just drop your books off in the drive through...DON'T go into the library...DON'T GO INTO THE LIBRARY!!!

Goes into library. But only checks out one new book, so I will consider it a success.

Ang Lee turned this "subversive western" into the movie, Ride With the Devil (but you know the drill ... "the book was better"). Daniel Woodrell is the author of Winter's Bone, which was also #madeintoamovie. #SomethingforSept

Bibliotini Woodrell is such a great writer. This has been on my TBR pile forever. 8y
