Country Dark
Country Dark | Chris Offutt
9 posts | 10 read | 5 to read
Chris Offutt is an outstanding literary talent, whose work has been called lean and brilliant (New York Times Book Review) and compared by reviewers to Tobias Wolff, Ernest Hemingway, and Raymond Carver. Hes been awarded the Whiting Writers Award for Fiction/Nonfiction and the American Academy of Arts and Letters Fiction Award, among numerous other honors. His first work of fiction in nearly two decades, (Country Dark is a taut, compelling novel set in rural Kentucky from the Korean War to 1970. Tucker, a young veteran, returns from war to work for a bootlegger. He falls in love and starts a family, and while the Tuckers dont have much, they have the love of their home and each other. But when his family is threatened, Tucker is pushed into violence, which changes everything. The story of people living off the land and by their wits in a backwoods Kentucky world of shine-runners and laborers whose social codes are every bit as nuanced as the British aristocracy, (Country Dark is a novel that blends the best of Larry Brown and James M. Cain, with a noose tightening evermore around a man who just wants to protect those he loves. It reintroduces the vital and absolutely distinct voice of Chris Offutt, a voice weve been missing for years.

Mehso-so

Page One books subscription sent me this book. I will admit that I had serious doubts about this novel based on the uninspired cover art. The story was better than I expected, but I‘m not a fan of historical fiction. Think Hunger Games + Tess of the D‘urbervilles + southern gothic style. Offutt has written screenplays for premium TV shows, and his novel reads like a film: quick dialogue with a lot of descriptions of sounds and sights. 🌘

Really good weekend read. There is a great sense of place and an engaging story all wrapped up in 200 pages.

This story takes place in the bootlegging hills of Kentucky in the 60s-70s. It's a quick read and well written. The author is a very good storyteller!

Today‘s #bookrecommendation Country Dark by Chris Offutt. Filled with evocative descriptions and beautifully told. #bookstagram #books #countrydark there is a memorable, elegant line on nearly every page; like this: “She hoped for a rainbow but none came and she understood that she was an adult now and adults didn‘t hope for what they couldn‘t control, but accepted what was there — the tree in the road, the woods, the soft thin blue of sky.”

I had the absolute pleasure of attending Chris Offutt‘s reading/discussion/signing tonight at my local indie bookstore. Always nice to see authors from Kentucky. Am excited to read his new novel as he read the first chapter and left me wanting more! (Author Tiffany Reisz was in attendance too.) 😊📚

Stephanie-Anne Author book signings are my favorite 😊 6y
