Jagua Nana
Jagua Nana | Cyprian Ekwensi

Bold, moving, entertaining and controversial, this is the great novel of 1960s Lagos life - with one of the most unforgettable heroines in literature. Jagua Nana, no longer young but still irresistible, lives a life of hedonism in Lagos: men, parties, fights, wild nights in the Tropicana with her handsome young boyfriend Freddie. Rushing from one experience to the next in search of something she can't quite grasp, Jagua finds herself embroiled in shady politics, caught up in village feuds and a source of drama wherever she goes. In this vivid depiction of 1960s Nigeria, everyone is hustling and everyone is on the make - and a woman like Jagua must find her own unconventional path to fulfilment.

Jagua traveled to Lagos in her youth to make it in the big city. When we meet her in her 40s things haven‘t gone as planned, she‘s meeting men at Tropicana in exchange for many and at the same time she has a relationship with a 20 yr younger man. And then things take a turn.

And that cover, it‘s eye catching

Whilst exploring the seedy underbelly of Lagos with titular character Jagwa, we constantly find ourselves asking what is one willing to sacrifice for fame and fortune. Ekwensi does not hold back, the blatant sexualisation of Nigerian women is tragically at the forefront of all conflict. A challenging read in many regards, Jagua Nana highlights when you live life fast, how can you slow down to learn who you really are?

Thank you @jenniferw88 for telling me to get this book it was amazing! I‘ve seen it compared to Dickens online for how it covers the light and dark of a whole city. The writing was just incredible, so immediate and real I felt like I was in Lagos. Jagua was an incredible MC and I love complex, interesting representation for sex workers. I need a film of Jagua immediately.

Cinfhen Definitely intrigued #stacked 4y
