Shakespeare's Sonnets and Other Poems
Shakespeare's Sonnets and Other Poems | William Shakespeare
7 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
William Shakespeare's sonnets are among the best-known poems in the English language, and the verses continue to touch the hearts of readers today. In Shakespeare's Sonnets and Other Poems, readers will find all 154 of the Bard's sonnets, along with his other poetic creations: "Venus and Adonis," "Lucrece," "A Lover's Complaint," "Sonnets to Sundry Notes of Music," and "The Phoenix and Turtle." With a flexibound cover that features foil stamping and a clean, modern look, this collection of poems is a beautiful addition to the shelf of any reader.

#OnThisDay in 1609 publisher and "procurer of manuscripts" issued the first publication of Shakespeare's Sonnets. Without the bard's approval. While his decision to publish without permission earned him some disdain, it is unlikely to have had a lasting effect on his reputation, and Thorpe's order of the sonnets largely holds today. #HistoryGetsLIT

This is a beautiful edition of Shakespeare‘s poetry. It also includes “Sonnets to Sundry Notes of Music” which I‘ve never seen included with Shakespeare‘s poetry before.

GingerAntics “Sonnets to Sundry Notes of Music” may or may not have been written by Shakespeare. It seems everything I can find attributes the text to “W. Shakespeare,” but I‘ve also read an article on the university of Iowa‘s website saying it‘s not. 🤷🏼‍♀️ it would be interesting to read it with the Shakespeare read along group, just to discuss if we felt like it was Shakes or not. 3y
Graywacke I‘m down, although I currently only own a sonnet collection. Thinking more, I‘m reading Petrarch now, so it would be a perfect year for me to read these sonnets. 😁 3y
GingerAntics @Graywacke at one point we talked about reading the sonnets when we got through all the plays. I read the sonnets back in 2019 maybe. The whole time I was trying to figure out how we would divide them up. It‘ll take some discussion, I think. I‘d be open to doing them this year. R&J has ties to Petrarch as well (wrote a paper on it in 2015), but I don‘t know if the group has read that one. 3y
Graywacke I don‘t think we‘ve done R&J. Cool. We can divide sonnets up by some weekly reasonable amount. Like 5 a week, or maybe 7 so we can all read one a day. 🙂 Would take a while that way, of course. 3y
GingerAntics @Graywacke it would, but then it would be totally reasonable to read them simultaneously with plays. That‘s good thinking. We may have to get a little more creative with the narrative poems. I‘m not sure how long those actually are. I‘ll have to check. 3y

Now dusting the Shakespeare shelf. Dusting takes a lot longer when you keep opening books to read a little. Ah, those sonnets...

AlaSkaat Haha, I second that. Although with any book anywhere. Sometimes it takes me a week to organise a small shelf because I must visit the books again and it turns a mess 5y

#NuYear #day6 #Desire Most of Shakespeare‘s writings are about desire of some sort. There‘s desire of the romantic kind, desire for power & the desire to have what others possess. His plays, sonnets & poems are all different in their forms, but at the bottom, it‘s all desire isn‘t it?

TrishB It certainly is ❤️ and that‘s a lovely looking book. 6y
