The Mystery of Edwin Drood
The Mystery of Edwin Drood | Dickens Charles
Charles Dickens Full name Charles John Huffam Dickens. (1812 1870) A famous English writer and social critic. Charles Dickens is regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime, and by the 20th century critics had recognised him as a literary genius. The Mystery of Edwin Drood is the final novel by Charles Dickens, unfinished at the time of the author's death. Though the novel is named after the character Edwin Drood, the story focuses on his uncle, choirmaster and opium addict, John Jasper, who is in love with Drood's fiance, Rosa. The unfortunate girl has also caught the eye of a certain Neville Landless. Landless and Drood take an instant dislike to one another, and Drood later disappears under mysterious circumstances

Pickpick

I'm quite a bit behind on book reviews, so there may be a small binge! This was my August #BookSpin draw. When I started it, I didn't realize that it is actually Dickens's final book, unfinished at the time of his death. I'm glad I found that out before I got to the end, because I would have been super annoyed lol As it was, I was able to mentally prepare as I read. At first I thought I had it all figured out, but honestly I do have a lot of ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) questions about where Dickens was going to go with some of these plot points and characters. I really liked the thriller-y aspect of it, and Jasper was an excellent villain with no one really suspecting him of being one.

Still working through Dickens's works, and I think this one would have been quite excellent in its entirety.

MrsK Unfortunately I was unaware of the end, or lack of, when I read this years ago. Still a great book though. Well worth digging out and reading again methinks🤔 2y
TheAromaofBooks @MrsKinvestigates - I would have been super frustrated if I had just gotten to the end and there wasn't one! 😂 2y

Reading old books is always entertaining because of the way words change over the years. I absolutely lost it during this scene where they are talking about how it's the birthday of Drood's fiancee, whom he has nicknamed “Pussy“ 😂

Ruthiella Yes! The words “ejaculate” and “intercourse” were also used differently in the past which often takes me aback! 😂 2y
TheAromaofBooks @Ruthiella - Every time someone ejaculates in conversation in an old book I get my middle school giggles on 😆 2y

I never actually posted my own #BookSpin list!! I have two lists - one that I use for my actual #BookSpin book, comprised of classics and other hefty tomes I've been meaning to read. Then I make a #BookSpinBingo list, which is all the books I want to read for the month. I've been leaving myself a lot of free spaces for backlog/catch up, but my trick is that I have to fill them in in order - I can't just choose the one that makes a bingo! I'm ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) not sure which of my two #TrappedonanIsland books I'm going to read, so I just left those open for whichever two end up getting checked off!! I'm always excited about a new month, even if I am involved in way too many challenges and buddy reads! 😂 2y
jimfields3 I like the creative use of the bingo board! 2y
UwannaPublishme Hope you find some extra reading time for all those books on your plate! ☺️ 2y
TheAromaofBooks @UwannaPublishme - I'm going to need about a month of nonstop reading to catch up 😂 2y

I did like this tho I‘ve gotta say it‘s difficult to read unfinished works as if they‘re full novels. I found this engaging and wanted to know what happened. It was a lot darker than other Dickens I‘ve read and I was sucked into the world of it for sure, and then it ended. So I do think it‘s a good book but it‘s hard to say I loved it when it just cut out so suddenly.

Liz_M This may be the rare instance where the musical is better than the book. 😆 It's written with multiple endings and a guide as to how to set up voting to allow the audience to choose the villain (and hints as to how to rig it so you don't have to rehearse 18 gazillion endings). 4y

#edwindrood another one I hadn‘t heard of, dickens last novel. #dickensiandecember

Leniverse Unfortunately he didn't finish it, and his notes were lost. There's several novels out there dealing with the mysteries surrounding the script and "how it should have ended". 6y
Kristelh @Leniverse good to know 6y
Liz_M I only know this one through the musical version, which is great fun :-)) 6y
BookwormM I have read this and have my own conclusion about who did it 6y

I don‘t have a copy of #EdwinDrood so I‘ll give you one more from the Fair instead. Here‘s the man himself reading from A Christmas Carol and even looking a tad mysterious 😌#DickensianDecember @jenniferw88

Typical Victorian gothic novel - Edwin disappears on Christmas eve and foul play is suspected. Ive come to the conclusion that i really don't like Dickens. He loves the sound of his own voice but contributes nothing to the narrative. I will stick to Wilkie Collins et al.

Aimeesue I totally agree about Dickens. I'll take a Collins over Dickens any day of the week. 6y

This one is hard to choose but I went for this as my #aclassicyouhaventread. It's the only Dickens I haven't read and will probably remain that way forever. I can't read an unfinished story (unless it's Wives and Daughters). #SeasonsReadings2016

Reviewsbylola That's why I haven't read Sandition by Jane Austen. 7y
respekt1111 You're not missing much tbh...the only reason I picked it up was bc I read Drood by Dan Simmons which...I didn't really fancy either 😕 7y
