A non-fiction book about life with cows on an English fram. I didn't especially care for the anecdotal style and seemingly random organization of the author's thoughts, but the stories were charming and made me think back fondly to my visit to the Cotswolds last year.

This woman is dedicated to all farm animals which in a way is amazing but very odd.

Hens enjoy human company & our hens hate to be left out of apparently interesting conversations. We had a large group of French agricultural students here & they had gathered in a ring to learn about crop rotation. The hens pushed into the centre of the melee. They stretched up to make themselves as tall & noticeable as possible & tried to take part in the conversation the only way they know, by singing loudly.

Some anthropomorphism, some lovely asides about other farm inhabitants, much tenderness. 🐄

Lindy @Reggie There‘s more to the story: Lone Ranger‘s first calf died, so Simone learned how to milk. Simone would just go up to her, wherever the cow happened to be in the corral, and fill a pail twice a day. One freezing evening when Simone was sick, I had to milk. It didn‘t go well. It was dark and the cow kept moving. The pail was only about 1/4 full and I had a thick layer of frozen milk all around the rim when I gave up. 5y

As calves get older and genuinely need to spend most of the day eating, they develop a routine for games at dusk. This is the time of night when we have seen calves playing tag with a fox, chasing pheasants, and organising heats in race-me-to-your-mother-and-back with the eventual winner leading a lap of honour round the perimeter of the field.

Lindy @Christine 👍I grew up on a mixed farm with 500 head of pastured beef cattle. Cows have been tied with cats and dogs as my favourite animals since I was small. 5y

2. It's a book about the lives and personalities of cows, how they form friendships, have hobbies and play games and so much else. It's really quite absorbing!🐄
