I read this one with my fifth graders. This is a brutally honest portrayal of the experiences of young boys (under 18) who fought in the Civil War. It is comprised of primary sources that have been researched by the author. Many photos are included as well.

The Civil War was the last time that “drummer boys” were used by the US military. These boys (some as young as nine years old) communicated vital information about troop maneuvers during battle and often drew fire because of it. Pictured above is 12-year-old Johnny Clem, who earned the nickname “Johnny Shiloh” after two of his drums were shot out of his hands at the battle of Shiloh.

LeahBergen @saresmoore Wow is right. I don‘t think my nephew at age 12 could even make his own toast. He‘s 18 now and I can‘t begin to contemplate someone so young being old enough to go to war. 💔 (edited) 6y

drokka Look at him in his official uniform and all. Having said that, the idea of children in armies and navies always gives me indigestion. I know that historically it was part of the thing, and that children are affected by conflict even if not as combatants, but there's something so, not quite sinister; rather it affects their love mapping, and I feel like it creates these deep fissures young, where hatred becomes ingrained. I hope I'm wrong about it. 6y
