Good Neighbors
Good Neighbors: A Novel | Joanne Serling
8 posts | 7 read | 10 to read
A searing portrait of suburbia, friendship, and family strained by a devotion to false appearances. In an idyllic suburb, four young families quickly form a neighborhood clique, their friendships based on little more than the ages of their children and a shared sense of camaraderie. When one of the couples, Paige and Gene Edwards, adopt a four-year-old girl from Russia, the group's loyalty and morality is soon called into question. Are the Edwards unkind to their new daughter? Or is she a difficult child with hidden destructive tendencies? As the seams of the group friendship slowly unravel, neighbor Nicole Westerhof finds herself drawn further into the life of the adopted girl, forcing Nicole to re-examine the deceptive nature of her own family ties, and her complicity in the events unfolding around her.

Four families living in wealthy suburbia form a friendship based on little more than their address and kids the same age. However, their perfect lives and friendships are challenged when one family adopts a little girl from a Russian orphanage.

Quietly unsettling, this was a good reflection on what we sometimes do to cover our pasts and how we need to belong.

Book G: #AtoZReadingChallenge

I for some reason loved this book and i say for some reason because it wasn‘t particularly exciting or thrilling, but i was hooked. The characters were so interesting and you never knew what was going to happen. Also how pretty is the cover??

4⭐️ Because I think that the ending could‘ve been developed better, but it was a great read overall. #NetGalley

I don‘t know why I do this to myself: Start a new book when I am having my coffee in the morning. This one has me hooked already and I didn‘t want to go to work! 🤦🏽‍♀️😂

One of my writing prof in college told us not to use exclamation points. Not saying this is right or wrong but it has stuck in my head. Now ever time I see it I cringe. There has been an explanation point on every page and unnecessarily so. “A red plastic mat!” Driving me nuts.

This was a dark and thought provoking little book. A group of neighborhood friends becomes suspicious about the way one couple is treating their newly adopted daughter. Are the suspicions founded or are their imaginations getting away with them.

This is a quick read but gets cringe-worthy intense toward the end. I've never lived on a street where the families lives were that intertwined, but this did make for a pretty great read!

I‘ve read some reviews in which people were bothered with the non-resolution, but sometimes our relationships with neighbors are just like that. They just move and the story ends.

It would be a great neighborhood bookclub pick!

Immediately engaging, this look into a Boston suburban neighborhood is one of those books that quickly becomes impossible to put down! All of the characters feel authentic- heartbreakingly so at times! It mounts with horror, too, and while there are some #FangsOutFriday catty comments, it‘s a more subtle and realistic tension that builds! I didn‘t want it to end! #HallowReads @Tiffy_Reads @JoeStalksBeck
