The Best American Essays 2017 | Leslie Jamison, Robert Atwan

They do what the essay form arguably does best: engaging the personal in order to reach larger themes . . . The essay form forces authors to take measure of themselves, and allows the reader to do so as well. Publishers Weekly The best-selling essayist Leslie Jamison picks the best essays from hundreds of magazines, journals, and websites, bringing her incredible ability to stitch together the intellectual and the emotional with the finesse of a crackerjack surgeon (NPR) to the task.

This collection felt solid to me. I can‘t remember well what previous years were like, but my impression is that this edition is particularly serious and politically-minded, as seems right and proper. There are lots of heavy pieces here, with lots of important ideas and stories for our times.

A good collection. A bit uneven. Stand-outs are Rachel Kushner‘s “We Are Orphans Here” (from The New York Times Magazine), Catherine Venable Moore's “The Book of the Dead” (originally pubbed in Oxford American and Andrea Stuart‘s “Travels in Pornland” (originally in Granta)

The editor did a very nice job in selecting the presented essays. Only one piece sticks out in my mind that didn't interest me, all others covered topics that I read about in 2017 and which hold my interest. So on a very personal level, because this collection reflects my taste in nonfiction, this was definitely a pick for me.

Instead of the tagged title (which I want to read!), I actually have the free kindle sampler that contains a couple essays. This essay is included, and I found it very thought-provoking about U.S. health care and its billing system and how the author learned the harsh reality of it all after a suicide attempt. Reminds me of @Riveted_Reader_Melissa ‘s current read. Found the link to the essay: www.vqronline.org/essays-articles/2016/03/cost-living

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Thanks for the link! 7y
