Joe Hill establishes a high standard in the inaugural volume of the Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy series. For me highlights include stories by Karen Russell, Seanan McGuire, Jo Walton, Neil Gaiman, Adam-Troy Castro, Kelly Link & T. C. Boyle. I will be reading future entries in this exciting series.

TheLondonBookworm Yes pleaseeeee I want! 7y
Scurvygirl I saw this at the library... 🤔🤔 7y

This Kelly Link story has several memorable, fantastic lines.

LeahBergen 😂😂 7y
RiotMom Whore-igami! 😂 (edited) 7y
JDHawkins Was this story in ? I think I read it! 7y
readordierachel That story has my favorite Kelly Link line ever: "Florida is California on a Troma budget." Hilarious. If you liked her style, her short story collections ate fantastic. 7y
vivastory @ReadOrDieRachel Haha, love that line. I kept picturing Brad Pitt as the demon lover in this story. I have several on my TBR pile. Will be reading more Link stories for sure. 7y

The most horrifying Pachinko game ever played. (Adam-Troy Castro)

ohyeahthatgirl Your posts are making me want to reread this. I loved this boom so much. 7y
vivastory @ohyeahthatgirl I've been taking a lot longer with it than I normally would, as I've been dipping into it between sections of Don Quixote & work has been very hectic for me. There are so many brilliant pieces in it. I haven't read the most recent edition but I'll definitely be surprised if it's as good as the Joe Hill volumes. 7y
ohyeahthatgirl I've read a few stories from the 2016 edition, and it's definitely not as great. Still pretty good, but Joe Hill knows where it's at. 7y

vivastory @ohyeahthatgirl definitely. Karen Joy Fowler seemed a strange choice. Has she written genre literature before? 7y
ohyeahthatgirl I think the closest she got was Black Glass, which I think is short stories? 7y
vivastory @ohyeahthatgirl I'll have to check that out. I wonder if they've announced 2017 editor. Can you imagine if they let Kelly Link edit? 7y
ohyeahthatgirl I'd crumple into a shapeless pile of joy. I'm pretty excited for whoever, though. I'm surprised the series wasn't started sooner. Maybe someone like Daniel Jose Older or NK Jemison would be great. 7y
vivastory @ohyeahthatgirl it is strange it took them so long. They have amazing intros for the best American series. Just read & loved Junot Diaz's introduction to "Best American Short Stories 2016" couple days ago & loved it 7y

I just read Jo Walton's story "Sleeper" & greatly enjoyed it. I know she has published several trilogies. Recommendations?

Karen_V The only one of hers I've read was Among Others, which I enjoyed. Scary fairies! 7y

This Karen Russell short story is f%$#!g brilliant. I've had "Swamplandia" on my TBR for awhile. Will be moving up with lightning speed.

KCorter Swamplandia was great!! 7y
vivastory I can't wait to read it. And more of her stories. @KCorter 7y
ohyeahthatgirl I am in love with Karen Russell's short stories! Swamplandia didn't quite hit home for me because of the ending, but she's such an amazing writer. 7y

vivastory @ohyeahthatgirl I've heard mixed things about it due to the ending. For me, I can overlook a weak beginning or ending if the rest of the book is remarkable. Since I first discovered her through her stories, I'm also really looking forward to those. Also, I noticed she has a digital novella that looks intriguing. 7y
ohyeahthatgirl The ending just needs a huge trigger warning, but it's spoilery. I'm not usually that sensitive to that kind of stuff, but this really got to me. I loooved the digital novella, though! I'm a sucker for stories about sleep issues. 7y
vivastory @ohyeahthatgirl If you like stories about sleep disorders, check out Kenneth Calhoun's 7y
ohyeahthatgirl I loved Black Moon! I push it on wayyy to many customers, probably. 7y
ohyeahthatgirl *too many. Womp womp. 7y
vivastory @ohyeahthatgirl I thought it was very underrated. I'm surprised I didn't hear more about it considering the success of "Bird Box." Where do you work? 7y
ohyeahthatgirl At a Barnes & Noble in Michigan. Bird Box is another one I push on everyone, haha. 7y
vivastory @ohyeahthatgirl I bet you get a good discount 7y

Jonathan Franzen, Zadie Smith, Donna Tartt? Fantasists all. Even those readers who would turn up their nose at a collection like this (perhaps to buy a copy of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt's The Best American Short Stories instead) are fantasy enthusiasts, whether they know it or not.-Joe Hill

ohyeahthatgirl I don't think I disliked a story in this book. It may have helped that I was on vacation...but I still think about a lot of these stories. 7y
vivastory @ohyeahthatgirl I'm really looking forward to it. Have you read the 2016 edition? 7y
ohyeahthatgirl I bought it, but haven't gotten to it yet. 7y

Marchpane Short science fiction is my favourite kind. Throw a concept out there for 50 pages and make me chew on it for days. 7y
vivastory @Marchpane have you read Ann & Jeff Vandermeers "Big Book of Science Fiction"? 7y
Marchpane Not yet, but I do have that one & need to get to it soon! I recently read and loved 7y
vivastory @Marchpane That's on my TBR. You wrote a great review of that BTW. 7y
Marchpane Aw thanks, that's so nice of you 😊 7y
readordierachel This is a FANTASTIC collection. 7y
vivastory @ReadOrDieRachel I've only read a few stories so far, but I'm really enjoying it. Have you read the 2016 edition? 7y
readordierachel It's sitting on my shelf as we speak, but I haven't cracked it open yet. 7y

I'm a little hard pressed to think of a better opening paragraph in a recently published anthology. This is Joe Hill's introduction to the anthology he edited.

My 2 picks for October. Homegoing was phenomenal, and there were so many great/interesting/creative stories in the 2015 Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy. I'm excited to read the 2016 collection, which came out this month! #bestofoctober #booktober
