The Explorers Guild
The Explorers Guild: Volume One: A Passage to Shambhala | Kevin Costner, Jon Baird
15 posts | 11 read | 22 to read
The golden age of adventure stories returns with this splendidly designed, action-packed, globe-trotting tale that combines the bravura storytelling of Kipling with the irresistible style of The Adventures of Tintin. Behind the staid public rooms of an old world gentlemens club operates a more mysterious organization: The Explorers Guild, a clandestine group of adventurers who bravely journey to those places in which light gives way to shadow and reason is usurped by myth. The secrets they seek are hidden in mountain ranges and lost in deserts, buried in the ocean floor and lodged deep in polar ice. The aim of The Explorers Guild: to discover the mysteries that lie beyond the boundaries of the known world. Set against the backdrop of World War I, with Western Civilization on the edge of calamity, the first installment in The Explorers Guild series, A Passage to Shambhala, concerns the Guild's quest to find the golden city of Buddhist myth. The search will take them from the Polar North to the Mongolian deserts, through the underground canals of Asia to deep inside the Himalayas, before the fabled city finally divulges its secrets and the globe-spanning journey plays out to its startling conclusion. The Explorers Guild is a rare publishing opportunity, powered by the creative passion of one of the worlds true storytelling masters, Kevin Costner.

I really wanted to love this book. It sounded so great at the outset. But 100 or so pages in, I just didn‘t care. For all the fun the authors had putting it together, they did a poor job of writing an engaging story. I was still confused about who the characters were, what was going on, and why.

emz711 I agree but i went back to it and it was worth it 5y
Meglet @emz711 thanks for that. The book should have been so great. It was beautiful to look at too! I‘ll have to try again sometime. 5y

Purrsistently @julesG It seems to be the actor, but I‘m not 100% sure😅 @robinb 6y
julesG From what I've seen here on Litsy, it seems to be the actor. Very mixed reviews. Looking forward to what you think about it. 6y

Interesting book.
Hard to tell who's the bad guy.
Like how it switches back and forth between a graphic novel and written passages.
Like the characters and they had good development.

I *might* have broken my reading slump after 2 very long months. But don't it too loudly just in case - don't wanna jinx it. Up next: this beauty.

I have NO IDEA if I will like this or not, but it is beautifully designed. If you can't tell by the photo, the pages are yellowed to look old. And the cover....

BookishMarginalia It's a gorgeous edition! 7y
8leagueboot The physical body of this book is such showstopper. 7y

Love me some good #endpapers! Today's #readjanuary is so much fun. While the true love for me is the story, I also can't resist some great #bookdesign. It's nerdy catnip! 💕📚💕🤓🤓

I should say, too, that if the Duke and his guests aren't quite the paragons their fathers were, why then, neither really were the fathers themselves.

I really wanted to like it. I mean an adventure novel/graphic novel sounds like a rollicking good time. It just wasn't 😕 2⭐️

Excited to read this next! The Explorers Guild is a beautifully designed novel in the old style of adventurous tales. Hardback with embossed and foil stamped cover, with headbands, a gorgeous dust jacket, and yellowed pages with comic book style illustrations.
