A Pizza the Size of the Sun
A Pizza the Size of the Sun | Jack Prelutsky
39 posts | 18 read | 2 to read
From the gifted creators of the outrageously popular "The New Kid on the Block" and "Something Big Has Been Here" comes yet another wondrously rich, varied, clever--and always funny--collection of poems destined to become favorites. A host of Prelutsky-Stevenson oddballs and characters people the pages of this zany book, which also includes a backwards poem and a poem that never ends. Full color.

This book has poems on pizza. It is very entertaining and fun to imagine the things that the author is saying in the poem. This would be great for younger children learning to work with poetry. It w corporates many different elements and it is very creative.

This was another extremely fun example of poetry. It had rhymes that flowed naturally and were easy to follow, and it had images that enhanced the silliness of the poems. Children will definitely engage with these poems.

I would use this in a future classroom because the short, concise, and silly poems will get the children really interested in learning about poetry.

This book would be great for 2nd and 3rd graders. They would love the rhyming and it would help them get familiar with how to rhyme what. I would read this to younger classes but I think its great for older classes because they could read it on their own.

This is a poetry book. This book uses a lot of rhyming throughout the story. Each word rhymes at the end of each sentence. For example the words sun and ton. This poems rhyming sounds natural.

A great book with quirky little poems. Some language might be more advanced so it would be good for older grades, but also great to just read once a day or so.

A Pizza the Size of the Sun (P) by Jack Prelutsky and illustrations by James Stevenson would be a great book to do a Read Aloud (RA) with. This poetry book it filled with cute, quirky poems that would be a great book to read to your kids during a poetry unit in English. The vocabulary in these poems, such as I‘m Wrestling with an Octopus, can be advanced; however, it will help strengthen student‘s vocabulary skills. The UDL principle used is 2.1,

Edenmonet clarifying vocabulary and symbols. The ESOL strategy used is 14, simplify your speech by making it slower and redundant. The teacher can explain vocabulary to the ESOL students in better detail so they can understand. A good poetry lesson plan is: http://teacher.scholastic.com/writewit/poetry/poetry_collaborative.htm #LAE3414SP19 5y
Haleysantucci This book looks adorable! Definitely want to get it for my preschool kids!! I think it would be great to do a vocabulary lesson with young kids since the words you talked about are a little bit advanced. Thanks for the poetry lesson plan!! 5y
Edenmonet @Haleysantucci Thank you, it was a great book! I will definitely be using it in my future classroom 5y
DrSpalding Continue to use Prelutsky books in your classroom. This is an excellent anthology. 5y

This wonderful P book is a collection of humorous poems by Jack Prelutsky & illustrations by James Stevenson. Includes advanced vocabulary, & multiple forms of play on words & text structure, for example, a poem written in a circle, & another you‘ll need a mirror to read. Great for IR, RA, PR, or if the technology is available, teachers can display the book through a projector for SR to teach rhyming, text structure, & vocabulary.

Laura.S @LisaMart this book looks so cute and fun! Anything with food on it catches my attention as It probably does with the students as well. There are so many UDL and EL strategy alignments that this book must be in my library! 6y

#ucflae3414f17 This is an awesome book of poems written by Jack Prelutsky that is a great addition to any elementary grade classroom library. The poems as well as the illustrations by James Stevenson are sure to have students laughing and having fun while reading. This book is a great way to introduce younger students to poetry. I think this book would be fun to do shared readings with the class in addition to giving students the option read

Radams Individually or with partners. Scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/writing-writers-poetry/ has a great lesson on poetry that can easily tie into reading Prelutsky‘s poems. UDL 6.1 ‘guide appropriate goal-setting‘ can used when reading the book with the class and explaining how to write poetry. EL 6 ‘continually monitor students‘ comprehension‘ can be applied during shared reading. 6y
DrSpalding You could use this in so many ways. Prelutsky is a favorite. 6y

Written by Jack Prelutsky, this P book is hilarious for all ages. Some of these clever poems include Meet Miss Misinformation, Swami Gourami, and a poem that never ends. Jack Prelutsky would be a good AS, because of all his other P books. http://jackprelutsky.com/bio/ the url takes you to Jack Prelutsky website, that would be a good source for an AS. #UCFLAE3414F17

CourtneyR UDL 9.1 Promote expectations and believes that optimize motivation. EL 8. Use direct instruction: Modeling, explaining, scaffolding, name the strategy and show how to use it. #UCFLAE3414F17 6y

This P book are full of poems by Jack Prelutsky and drawings by James Stevenson. A Pizza the Size of the Sun is the first poem followed with a variety of poems of all shapes, sizes, and themes. From a poem about wrestling a octopus to Dan the Invisible Man who got a tan but you can't see. Each poem has a drawing that helps aid with imagery. Kids will relate to a lot of them and have fun reading them all. At least I did!

Floribelg I would use this book in an AS and I'll posting more books about this author keep an eye out for future posts. http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/lesson_images/lesson1160/poetry_an... The link is a poetry analysis worksheet from Read Write Think perfect for student use and UDL 2.1 and 3.2 will clarify the structure of the poems and main ideas. Use ESOL 2 for students to work together to understand the meaning as a shared reading. 6y
Floribelg I was going to include a book called Lazy BlackBird and Other Verses by Jack Prelutsy which is another great P book but I wasn't able to review it. If you get a chance the CMC has the book and definitely recommend checking it out! #UCFLAE3414F17 (edited) 6y
