To kill a mockingbird is a classic, realistic fiction novel by Harper Lee that won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. This book is read nation wide by kids in middle school and in high school and it was one of my favorites to read. This Book is about tensions that rise I was one of the main characters, Atticus finch, prepares to defend a black man accused of raping a white woman.

Haleysantucci This book follows the main character scout, Atticus‘s daughter, throughout her days and what she does in hopes of helping those around her during the 1930s. It shows, in specific detail, that all of the characters come from walks of economic hardship during this time as it follows the great depression. This book is a great book to use in literature circles. 5y
Haleysantucci UDL principles I would use would be, 3.2 and 8.3 to compliment the teaching strategy because there is many patterns, big ideas, and relationships throughout this story that the students need to identify while collaborating with in their community of peers. 5y
Haleysantucci The ESOL strategy number I would use would be number 9, because when working in a literature circle it is important to have all of your information in one location and understanding how to take notes is a vital part of having all of your information in one place. 5y

Brown Girl Dreaming | Jacqueline Woodson
post image
Pickpick

Brown girl dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson is a biography written in the form of poetry that won the Sibert award. This story follows the life of the author, Woodson, as she grew up in South Carolina and then moved to New York. She explains how she never felt at home and what it feels like to grow up as an African-American in the 60s and 70s. The poems are very heart wrenching and powerful and are displayed in vivid poems.

Haleysantucci It‘s a beautiful story because it shows how the author found her love for writing. I think that students should do an author study coupled with this book because I think it would give them more insight into the book since it was about the authors life. 5y
Haleysantucci The UDL principles used would be 3.1 because the students would be supplying background knowledge and 4.2 because we would optimize their tools, through technology, of finding out more information on the author. 5y
Haleysantucci ESOL strategies used would be numbers 5 and 6 by supplying the students with vocabulary words that will be used throughout the story that are linked to the main idea and then monitoring them while they read to make sure that they are comprehending. 5y

The surrender tree by Margarita Engle is a great poetry book that won the Pura Belpre award. It is a collection of poems written by margarita that give a depiction of the struggles in Cuba. This book follows a woman Rosa through her hardship of slavery and her fight for freedom and independence. It begins when she is a child and goes into her adult life.

Haleysantucci I think that this would be a great book to do literature circles with, although I think it would be best it for older elementary students since poetry can be difficult to read and follow. I would utilize UDL principle 2.2 and 2.3 since the structure of poems is different than what young students are used to reading and they would have to work on decoding the text. 5y
Haleysantucci I would use ESOL strategy number 27 and 30 which would help the student be able to read the text better and understand the relationships and main details of the story. 5y

Amelia Earhart: the legend of the lost aviator is a great biography by Shelley Tanaka with illustrations by David Craig which has won Orbis Pictus award. I chose this book, initially, because of it‘s beautiful illustration on the front cover. It is a great book that talks about Amelia‘s early life and how she became fascinated with air travel.

Haleysantucci I think this is a great book for students to partner read so that they can collaborate on their opinions of Amelia Earhart. I would use UDL principles 7.1 by allowing the students to choose their own partners and 8.3 because they‘d be collaborating with in their one-on-one partnership. 5y
Haleysantucci I would utilize ESOL strategy number 17 and2 because the book would have visual representation of what the story was saying and they‘d be working in a small group. 5y
Haleysantucci https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Book-activities-for-Amelia-Earhart-t... Although this is a resource you‘d have to pay for, it is a great one for older elementary kids focusing on history, reading and vocabulary! 5y

Last stop on market Street is a beautiful realistic fiction story written by Matt de la Peña and illustrations are done by Christian Robinson and it won the Charlotte Zolotow award honor. It‘s about a little boy name CJ and his Nana. Every Sunday after church they take the bus to its last stop, CJ begins to wonder why they always have to take this trip when his friends don‘t have to.

Haleysantucci He wonders why he hast to wait in the rain and why his friends parents have cars when his Nana doesn‘t. It‘s a great book for children to listen to, that‘s why I would do a read aloud for this book. I would use UDL principles 1.2 and 4.1 since I would be doing a read aloud and trying to make it interactive. 5y
Haleysantucci I would utilize ESOL strategies 15 and 14 by reinforcing the key ideas in the book over and over again at a slow pace to make sure all my students understand. 5y

Underground Railroad | Colson Whitehead

Pickpick

The underground railroad by Colson Whitehead is a great realistic fiction book that won the national book award. This book is about a slave named Cora who is on a plantation in Georgia. She learns about the underground railroad and decides to run away and follow it. This book is a thrilling book with real insight on what happened in slave times. I would have my students read this book in literature circles.

Haleysantucci I would utilize UDL principle 8.3 by having the students collaborate within their literature circle communities. I would utilize the ESIL strategy number 29 by giving them more materials such as a bilingual dictionary. 5y
Haleysantucci http://www.bookrags.com/lessonplan/the-underground-railroad-novel/lessons.htmlhi... This is a great lesson for teachers on how to properly teach this book to their students. #LAE3414sp19 5y
DrSpalding Knowing that the underground railroad and all events surrounding this time period, occurred well in the past… This would not be considered realistic fiction. If it is true and factual information it would not be considered fiction at all… What genre do you think it is now? 5y

Night by Eli‘s Wiessel is a great nonfiction book about life in a concentration camp during World War II. In eighth grade I read this book and fell in love with it‘s heart wrenching story. The author depicts his own life in the concentration camp with his father, using some of his own stories and some of others, written in a beautiful story. It will definitely pull at your heartstrings.

Haleysantucci I would love to have my students do an author study for this book since the author lived through the concentration camps in World War II. UDL principles I would use would be 9.2 because of the graphic details that are given in the story and also 2.5 because I would want them to utilize the Internet when researching the author. 5y
Haleysantucci I would use ESOL strategy number 28 by giving biographies on Hitler, Stalin and other significant figures during this time in history. 5y
Haleysantucci http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/using-student-cen.... This is a great lesson plan for teachers to use by having kids get in small groups and work on summarizing, questions, predicting and clarifying. #LAE3414sp19 5y
caldwellalex95 @Haleysantucci I read this story when I was in middle school, and it was an amazing experience. Also, I love the lesson plan you chose; students working in groups is a great tool for discussion! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this incredibly novel! 5y

Dragons and marshmallows by Asia Citro is an adorable modern fantasy book that is on the sunshine state young readers list. This story is written about a girl who discovers magical animals come out to meet her in her backyard when they are injured. One day a dragon named marshmallow comes and is in need of her care. This story is a great choice for an independent read because it is a pleasurable book for children.

Haleysantucci The UDL principle used would be 6.1 because I would want them to have an appropriate goal in mind for finishing this book, one, of course, that is at their own pace. I would utilize the ESOL strategy number 9, first teaching students how to take notes and then allowing them to use their knowledge from my modeling when reading the book. 5y

Diary of a wimpy kid, written and illustrated by Jeff Kinney is a New York Times bestseller and is a hilarious realistic fiction. I loved reading these books in middle school and was thrilled when they came out with the movie series based off the book. This book follows the life of a scrawny boy who is starting middle school and his hilarious friends.

Haleysantucci Each book is filled with stories that are geared to make you laugh! I would love for my students to do a dramatic read for this book as sort of a comical experience. I would utilize the UDL principle 1.3 by allowing them to act it out and give another visual representation of the story. 5y
Haleysantucci I would use the ESOL strategy number 2 by having them work in small groups to read aloud dramatically to one another. 5y

The Giver | Lois Lowry

The giver by Louis Lowery is by far one of my favorite science fiction books, it has won a Newbery award. When I was in fifth grade we read this book in literature circles and it was an amazing experience, I would do the same strategy in my classroom. The book is set in a society that tries to make everyone the same, same clothes same beliefs and same attitudes.

Haleysantucci This society has eliminated things such as color, emotions, and job preferences in order to keep peace among everyone. Jonah, the main character, is given the job to be the memory bearer and is in for many surprises. This book has many twists and turns. I highly recommend reading it and/or implementing a reading lesson on it in your classroom. 5y
Haleysantucci I would utilize USL principle 9.1 by listing the expectations for each literature circle so that each student knew what they were doing and were motivated to get it done. I would also utilize the ESOL strategy 16 because the ESOL students would be working in groups and practicing listening, speaking, reading, and writing. 5y

A Poem for a Pickle: Funnybone Verses | Eve Merriam, Sheila Hamanaka

Poem for a Pickle written by Eve Merriam and illustrations by Sheila Hamanaka is a great source for poetry. This book is comprised of 239 different styles of poems. This is a great source for teaching children about writing poetry. I would have my students do shared reading so that I could guide them and model for them first how to read poetry and then they could read and share their favorite poems with one another.

Haleysantucci I would utilize UDL principle 6.2 and 6.1 by instructing the students to plan out written poem and make sure that they have an appropriate goal in mind for when they are developing their very own poems, using the books poems as examples. 5y
Haleysantucci I would utilize the ESOL strategy 8 by modeling how to write a poem and explaining how to find it in the book and then showing them how to use the book as a helpful reference in writing their poem. 5y

Martins Big Words is a biography written by Doreen Rappaport and illustrated by Brian Collier which has won the Jane Addams children‘s book award. It is a great book with absolutely amazing pictures. It is a great source for history classes when Martin Luther King day comes. It gives a clear description of Martin Luther King‘s life.

Haleysantucci I would have students partner read this book so that they could discuss their feelings and thoughts on who he was and what he did. The UDL principle I would use, would be 8.3 and 7.1 because they would get to choose their partners and build upon each other‘s knowledge. 5y
Haleysantucci The ESOL strategy I would use would be number 6 because I would be walking around the classroom making sure that my ESOL students were understanding what was being read back-and-forth between them and their partner. 5y

Hi! Fly Guy | Tedd Arnold

Hi! Fly Guy is a fun science fiction book written and illustrated by Tedd Arnold and it won the Theodore Seuss Geisel Award! It‘s a very funny book about a boy and his pet fly, who, by the way, calls him by his name. Everyone in the book tells the boy that he can‘t have a Fly as a pet, but the fly shows them why they are wrong. This would be a great book to have the class choral read.

Haleysantucci I would utilize UDL principle 3.2 because of the patterns that repeat throughout and the relationship between the boy and the fly and how it changes throughout. I would utilize the ESOL strategy Number 19 as we would repeat the same predictable routine throughout the choral reading. 5y

Parts, written and illustrated by Tedd Arnold, is a hilarious nonfiction book about what went through his sons head when he got his first wiggly tooth. I would choose to storytell this book, as I will soon be doing in my LAE class. As I‘ve been practicing it to many people, no one has been left without a giggle. I highly recommend giving this a read, no matter the age.

Haleysantucci I highly recommend giving this a read, no matter the age. I would utilize UDL principles 7.2 and 7.3 because the children I would be reading this to would have much value and relevance for the situation the boy is in, in the story. I would also eliminate distraction by utilizing props in my storytelling. 5y
Haleysantucci The ESOL strategy I would use would be Number 11 and 14 because this book talks a lot about different body parts which I could slowly explain and repeat. 5y

The three little pigs is a widely known children‘s book, a TL, and this specific one is by Paul Galdone, one of the original authors and illustrators. In this book, each of the pigs build a house made out of different materials.

Haleysantucci The first pig built a house out of straw, which is, unfortunately, blown down by a wolf. The next pig builds his house out of sticks, which is blown down by the wolf as well. The last pig, however, builds his house out of brick to which the wolf cannot blow down. Children all over adore this book! I would apply the teaching strategy, readers theater to this book! 5y
Haleysantucci I actually had my preschool class do a readers theater and perform this book and there was nothing but smiles! We of course had to do it a few times so that everyone could be a pig and a wolf! I would utilize UDL principle 1.3 because the children would get to see the illustrations as well as see their classmates perform in front of them, thus offering different alternatives for visual comprehension. 5y
Haleysantucci I could also use the ESOL strategy number 2 by breaking the class up into small groups and having each group perform the short story. 5y

Haleysantucci https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.sadlier.com/school/ela-blog/wonder-lesson-plans... has a few lesson plans that help younger kids learn about acceptance of others. I found the kind journal to be the best one on this site. You have the kids keep a journal for 10 days and each day you do something kind to another and write about how it made them feel. I thought it was such a good activity 5y
Haleysantucci Other lessons on the site include a compare and contrast graph of the different perspectives of Auggie in the book. UDL 9.1 is great for this lesson as we would be listing our expectation to be kind to others no matter what they look like and motivating them through the promotion of that expectation. ESOL strategy 16 would be used as the student speaks kindly to others, listens to feedback and writes about it. 5y

Haleysantucci https://www.matchfishtank.org/curriculum/english-language-arts/5th-grade-literat... is a great lesson plan for kids in 5th grade. This is a great plan for ESOL kids as well because it teaches them about community and family writhing the book which is pulling on knowledge they already have and joining it with those themes found in the book. 5y
Haleysantucci UDL 3.1 is used in this as the lesson plan pulls previous knowledge learned in prior lessons and apples it to what they are learning in this lesson. ESOL strategies 5 and 6 are important to use here as the children will be learning new vocabulary. 5y
