Elegantly written and profoundly moving, this spellbinding debut affirms Boast's reputation as a "new young American voice for the ages" (Tom Franklin). Born with a rare (and real) condition in which she suffers degrees of paralysis when faced with intense emotion, Daphne has few close friends and even fewer lovers. Like her mythic namesake, even one touch can freeze her. But when Daphne meets shy, charming Ollie, her well-honed defenses falter, and she's faced with an impossible choice: cling to her pristine, manicured isolation or risk the recklessness of real intimacy. Set against the vivid backdrop of a San Francisco flush with money and pulsing with protest, Daphne is a gripping and tender modern fable that explores both self-determination and the perpetual fight between love and safety.Praise for Will Boast: "Remarkable."-- Phillip Lopate"[Boast] can really write."-- Ann Beattie"So essential, so alive, so immediate."-- Jesmyn Ward

Daphne took me for some twists and turns and even now, to be honest, not sure what to think about the evolution that the MC went through. By the halfway mark, as Daphne started to let her darker thoughts get the better of her, it felt like whatever progression made was for nothing, and Daphne regressed and almost gladly, let go of the pretense of intimacy.

Maybe falling in love isn't for all and Boast explored that in this debut book.

Inspite of the not so good reviews I picked thi book since it was a book we were talking about in our book club and also since it said it was a " romance novel". I like a complex protagonist character so thought it was interesting until I hit half of the book. After that it was hard to take the same thing over and over. There is no proper character arc or story arc. I had to read through the end expecting something to change but nothing changed.

An enjoyable read! While getting more books from the #library, I saw this book in the new fiction, and was immediately drawn in by the beautiful cover. After reading the the synopsis, I was intrigue by the idea that the main lead of the story struggles with keeping in control of her #emotions and a new romantic interests challenges her built up principles. Not knowing the story of #Daphne and #Apollo didn‘t interfere with the story for me.

Interesting idea with lots of potential, but it didn‘t really come together for me. Wanted to root for Daphne, Ollie, and even Daphne‘s friend Brook, but none of them seemed fully fleshed out enough to connect with them.

The author isn‘t a Hoosier but I love a good “there‘s more than corn in Indiana” reference. It also places you geographically because my friend who grew up in Southern Indiana has apparently NEVER heard this jingle. I was flabbergasted.

I am kicking off a staycation where my only firm plans are to read as much as humanly possible (Though I also need to go grocery shopping because I have been bad and lazy in my eating habits lately. I like eating, I just don‘t always have the patience for the shopping and cooking. Working on it.). But for now, I am starting with this.

I'm cheating a bit in that this book is being released in the #future 😁. Fascinating premise-the woman becomes paralyzed (literally) whenever she feels intense emotion. It's a retelling of the Daphne and Apollo myth, which I'm going to have to read up on after this. Isn't the cover amazing? 🤩🤩

LauraJ Lovely! Hope what‘s inside is just as appealing. I love a good myth retelling! 6y
