This collection of short stories was enjoyable and engaging.

That says a lot coming from a reader who doesn't typically like short stories!

The stories take place in the South and feature mostly "dirt-roaders" in their day to day existence.

This came to me in a subscription box. I never would have picked it up on my own, but am glad to have read it and be able to recommend it ?

The character is introduced as 'Donny' but then referred to as 'Danny' for the rest of the story...

I like my toast dark & crispy! 😋 And I like bright covers like this one I‘m starting. 🌝 I‘ve been sitting on this for quite awhile and the time is right for a collection of shorts.

Tamra Okay, the author‘s intro is very good! I really enjoyed her novel 5y
rretzler Dark and crispy toast is the best. I refuse to eat soggy toast - can‘t stand it if toast is stacked on top of each other like they do in restaurants 😁 5y
Blaire I also like dark toast, I always tell restaurants to toast it twice and have to explain...no I mean really dark. (edited) 5y
bedandabook I‘m always on the lookout for new short story collections, so do let us know what you make of this one! 5y

Short stories, all have as a theme life as a young, poor African-American girl in the South. Very readable, although the situations the characters find themselves in are not necessarily the greatest, the writing is so straight forward that the book is not depressing (okay- but not uplifting either!) One story ends badly for more than one dog, so if you are grieving after the loss of a loved pup, you might want to read sonething else.

quillable This sounds interesting! 6y

This is one of the more consistently solid short story collections I have read in a while. The wonderful, yet simple writing style, is incredibly effective in telling about the every day lives of this group of women in the South. Highly recommended.

Has anyone listened to “Unassigned Territory” on LeVar Burton Reads? First, I loved the story and am anxious to read the collection. But, I was puzzled by LaVar‘s interpretation of the end in his reflection on it. I listened to the end 3-4 times thinking I‘m missing something. Will someone listen and set me straight???

MoMogrl @Tamra I have not listened to it, but I am a Jehovah's Witness so depending on what the question is I may be able to clarify. I'm not familiar with the story though. (It may be easier to send me an email if you still have it and if this will take some explanation) 6y
Tamra @MoMogrl thank you for the offer! It isn‘t a doctrine specific question, it is LaVar‘s interpretation of the intent of the MC at the end. 6y
MoMogrl @Tamra no problem. 6y

MoMogrl @Tamra I just listened to it because it piqued my interest. I may have the same confusion you do. What was the question you had? 6y
Tamra @MoMogrl It seems LeVar interprets MC as staying & conforming despite not wanting to, while I thought she had decided against it. 6y
MoMogrl @Tamra I interpreted it the same as you. LeVar's take on it confused me too. I thought she decided not to. Did we miss something in the last few sentences which caused him to interpret it differently from us? Unless he interpreted her saying "yes that's what I'm thinking about" as her choosing to stay. I don't know. 6y
Tamra Ok, good. Maybe I‘m not off track! I have listened to the end several times. 😜 I will get the collection on paper and we‘ll see if it reads differently in that form. 6y
MoMogrl I'm definitely curious. 6y

Today‘s roundup is 4 very different short story collections. I used to think I didn‘t like short pieces, but I was wrong. More info on the blog if you feel like clicking through. http://www.bethfishreads.com/2018/02/4-short-story-collections-to-read-this.html...

I always have a eArc on my phone to read at lunch time, but the original one I had picked (My Pet Serial Killer) was not grabbing my interest. Trying this collection of stories instead and I'm already digging it. #edelweiss #CurrentlyReading
