Gaviotas
Gaviotas: A Village to Reinvent the World, 2nd Edition | Alan Weisman
3 posts | 1 read | 3 to read
Los Llanosthe rain-leached, eastern savannas of war-ravaged Colombiaare among the most brutal environments on Earth and an unlikely setting for one of the most hopeful environmental stories ever told. Here, in the late 1960s, a young Colombian development worker named Paolo Lugari wondered if the nearly uninhabited, infertile llanos could be made livable for his countrys growing population. He had no idea that nearly four decades later, his experiment would be one of the worlds most celebrated examples of sustainable living: a permanent village called Gaviotas. In the absence of infrastructure, the first Gaviotans invented wind turbines to convert mild breezes into energy, hand pumps capable of tapping deep sources of water, and solar collectors efficient enough to heat and even sterilize drinking water under perennially cloudy llano skies. Over time, the Gaviotans experimentation has even restored an ecosystem: in the shelter of two million Caribbean pines planted as a source of renewable commercial resin, a primordial rain forest that once covered the llanos is unexpectedly reestablishing itself. Colombian author Gabriel Garca Mrquez has called Paolo Lugari Inventor of the World. Lugari himself has said that Gaviotas is not a utopia: Utopia literally means no place. We call Gaviotas a topia, because its real. Relive their story with this special 10th-anniversary edition of Gaviotas, complete with a new afterword by the author describing how Gaviotas has survived and progressed over the past decade.

What do you do when your school gets a new set of books? Do you throw out the old copies? HECK NO!!!! You take them home and repurpose them into special gifts for your students! ❤️❤️ I can‘t wait to show you the finished products!

LiteraryinLawrence Wow! Can‘t wait to see! As a totally unartsy person, I really respect people who are. 6y

Now, the 6th grade book selection for Back to School Night which includes the infamous Gaviotas by Alan Weisman. The kids hate this book, but we read it because it is a challenging non-fiction and they learn valuable skimming and scanning skills. They come back years later to visit and still talk about it 😉

Ruri_kaichou We don't appreciate those challenging ones til way later in life for sure. 😳 7y
CoffeeK8 This is a great idea, do you just set them out for parents to look at, or do you discuss them? 7y
Bookworm83 @CoffeeK8 We do an open house format, so parents can come in, look at the books and informally chat with teachers. It's really nice for all of us! 7y

Bookworm83 @Ruri_kaichou It's so true! Btw, once things settle down a little bit with school, I'll get in touch with you. I'd love to do another Litsy meet up! 7y
CoffeeK8 That's a great idea! I'm stealing this to recommend to my principal 7y
Bookworm83 @CoffeeK8 Please do! It's been really successful at our school 👍🏻 7y
Ruri_kaichou Yes! I was thinking about that today! And just to have the idea in your head, I was thinking end of August 😉 7y
Bookworm83 @Ruri_kaichou sounds great! 7y
Sace I could even use that as a cultural component for my Spanish class! Granted, it's high school but they may appreciate a lower reading level. I'm trying to focus more on reading for pleasure. 7y
Bookworm83 @RestlessFickleBookSlut Absolutely! It's a fascinating read, and it's at least a 9th grade reading level 👍🏻 7y
Sace @Bookworm83 awesome! 7y
