The Familiar, Volume 5
The Familiar, Volume 5: Redwood | Mark Z. Danielewski
30 posts | 14 read | 13 to read
The finale of Season 1 of this riveting multisensory masterpiece from the visionary author of House of Leaves. On one side of the world, a cat goes missing. On the other side of the world, a cat is found. From Singapore to Mexico City to Los Angeles, nine lives are chosen, and the familiar becomes ever more strange. Mark Z. Danielewski's The Familiar is a "fascinating, ongoing, humongous experiment with form and the experience of reading" (The Boston Globe) that, with Volume 5, continues to revolutionize the act of storytelling.

#catchingup on #riotgrams #day20 - #puzzlebooks

This series could certainly feel like the unfolding of an epic puzzle at times. I hope Danielewski is able to continue his story someday.

This series has just been phenomenal and the season concluding book 5 brought a lot of disparate threads together. I always look forward to the textual shenanigans Danielewski gets up to and this lion in text format is just awesome!

Love it. I don‘t know what the future holds for this series since it‘s been put on hiatus but I will follow it anywhere. >^..^

1. Mozzarella sticks
2. 3% is only 0.75 of a book for me, and I had too many good reads this year to pick just one, so I‘ll go with top 3 (excluding rereads): The Bell Jar, The Handmaid‘s Tale, Redwood (TFv5)
3. Read at least 15 books and try to read two prompts for each of the #Booked2018 seasons.
4. Find a job
5. ❤️❤️❤️

Another quote that made me do a double take...

SkeletonKey I haven't gotten to Vol. 5 yet, has it been good? I've only read the first one. 6y
Fang88 @SkeletonKey YES! After the first one I honestly wasn't sure of wether I should continue, since it sure is very time and thought consuming. But with every chapter and every book it gets easier to read, as you start to adjust to the pace and the characters. It slowly starts to all come together. It gets super enthralling and less exhausting... It has become a very big part of my life even outside the book. 6y
SkeletonKey @fang88 - Ah that's excellent news! I was concerned about committing to such a big series without payoff. I'll keep going then 😄 6y

OSChamberlain @SkeletonKey Vol. 5 is insane! Definitely worth the trek. Though I thoroughly enjoyed all 4 volumes, 5 is definitely my favorite! 6y
bookmandan Oh wow, I read House of Leaves years ago and had no idea he had a series out. Guess I know how I'm starting 2018! 6y
Fang88 @bookmandan there is also a reading group for The Familiar on facebook which is really great. You might want to check that one out, we have become quite a tight knitt community on there... 6y
tpixie Wow! 6y
Ingerella I would love to try this series but I have to admit I'm a little intimidated by it! Maybe I should just jump in! 6y
Fang88 @Ingerella for sure! 6y

The book came to life at the reading in Vienna. I loved hearing Mark Z Danielewski reading out the characters, it made me feel like I met all of them in person.

I actually read a lot of great sequels this year, but the vast majority were rereads...and were Harry Potter, which is obviously fantastic, so I‘m going to exclude rereads for today to make this decision easier. 😂 So, I‘m going to say the best sequel I read this year was The Familiar volume 5: Redwood. I was so excited to read this one, and thankfully, it did not disappoint.

Not as good as October, but I‘m glad I read more than two books this month. I‘m so close to finishing The Handmaid‘s Tale, but I‘m tired, so I don‘t think I‘ll finish it tonight. I‘ve really enjoyed it so far though, so I think it and TFv5 are probably going to be my two #fallfavorites.

I love how this entire volume takes place over the span of, most likely, 12 hours. The biggest, most anticipated meeting between Xanther and Tian Li doesn‘t take up the most pages but all of our minor characters are directly effected and end up telling the story instead. The way this story reverberates through itself is masterful. Picture from preview of Volume 6.

My reason for going to the @strandbookstore was to pick up a signed copy of the new Familiar which I missed out on getting personalized because I was double booked seeing Matthew Weiner...

Included is a shot of one of the tote tables, most of which I covet 😍

shendrix413 😍😍😍😍😍 6y
Jabberwocky I would kill for anything signed by him. I still need to crack the first familiar. 😅 6y
mrozzz @Jaberwocky oh no worries I haven't finished the first one either! So now I owe just the 1st and the 5th LOL just couldn't pass up the opportunity for the signature when I saw he would be in NY 6y

Xanther drapes over little one, snugs her arms around him, like walls, of first returning a tiny corner of cashmere dryness over the even softer ripples of white fur ... hide everything but the tip of one white ear ... left like a tiny pyramid emerging from charred sand ... wondering if maybe Egyptian pyramids are just the tops of much, much bigger pyramids buried beneath the sand. #quotsynov17 #underground

Today's #litsypartyofone...

Avanders Volume 5! I didn‘t even know.... I have the first volume and can‘t wait to get to it! 6y
Nuwanda @Avanders I think you'll really enjoy the series! There is a Facebook book club to check out when you do get to it! Lots of in-depth conversations about the books and all the good MZD weirdness they entail. 6y
PirateJenny Mmm Tate's cookies. Even if, as we say, they're spelled wong (my last name is Tait 🤣). Also I may have to order this series. 6y
See All 6 Comments
Nuwanda @PirateJenny I would definitely claim these as my family's cookies if my last name were that similar! 😂 And you should definitely try out the series. Have you read any other MZD books before? (edited) 6y
Avanders Oooh very cool! 😄 6y
PirateJenny @Nuwanda not yet. I have House of Leaves. I think I have had it for at least 10 years and just not gotten to it. The cruel thing about this one? It's listed as a new release in the Random House Reader App but it's unavailable! We can't download books from distribution clients. So it's mocking me and everyone else who works at PRH. 6y

The only book currently on my TBR for the month. Now that I‘ve finished my reread of Harry Potter and the other books in The Familiar, I‘m going back to reading based on my mood. My only plan is to hopefully read more than two books this month, what books those are I‘ll figure out later.

Ahhhhhh, excitement! 😃😃😃😃😃 I will forever be nervous about my preorders though. The first time I ever preorder a book on Amazon, I was incredibly excited, but when I opened the box...they‘d sent me a package of old looking batteries by mistake. 🙃 The book sucked too, so the whole experience was one giant letdown. 😂 I‘ve got my fingers crossed that that won‘t be the case this time. 🤞🏽

1. Fall leaves
2. The Familiar volume 5, unless I figure out something else I want to read now and can finish reading by next Tuesday. 👍🏽
3. Milk, but I like all three.
4. Yes, but very mildly, so it‘s not really worth mentioning.
5. My boyfriend‘s shorts
