Once Is Not Enough | Jacqueline Susann
4 posts | 14 read | 6 to read
The spectacular bestseller from the author of VALLEY OF THE DOLLS.Once upon a time, the entertainment industry was a world that never slept. Magazine editors, models, pop stars and all the rest visited vitamin doctors to get the shots that would allow them to stay up all night and then work all dayin offices decorated with beanbag chairs and Calderesque mobiles In this world, January Wayne goes from poor-little-rich-girl to grown-up swinger, as she searches New York and Los Angeles for a guy just like Mike Wayne, the glamorous movie producer, who also happens to be her fatherSPECTACULARLY SUCCESSFUL. There are plane crashes, drug orgies, motorcycle accidents, mass rapes, attempted abortions, suicide, evil doctors and other assorted activities; and I couldnt put the damned thing down. Library Journal[Susanns] pulp poetry resonates to this day. WITH HER FORMULA OF SEX, DRUGS, AND SHOW BUSINESS, Susann didnt so much capture the tenor of her times as she did predict the Zeitgeist of ours.Detour

Happy 101st birthday Jacqueline Susann! One of the best selling authors of her day, Susann rocked the world with her frank depiction of the sexual revolution. A woman well before her time!

Pickpick

Ranking number two on my list of top 3 Susanns, this book is constructed entirely out of chain smoking, hamburgers, intramuscular shots of speed at the Beverly Hills Hotel, eyelashes, and LSD. It has a bizarre, utterly cringeworthy train wreck of an ending, yet, even on my third read was impossible to put down. In short: it is capital e Entertainment. Next time you see it in a used bookstore, pick it up and read it drunk in the tub.

babsbourland @BarbaraTheBibliophage 😎 it is such a weird but dynamic book. 7y
MMenefee I like your review, and I'll be reading this in March as my book club picked it to discuss at our April gathering. 7y

emilyhaldi Love this review! I'm sold 7y
babsbourland @MMenefee oh hilarious timing! The plot is crazy. The themes, like basically all susann, rotate around one big Electra complex, but there is something about her writing that I think is still SO MUCH FUN. Enjoy it for what it is!! 7y
LeahBergen I need to add more "drunk tub reading" into my life. ? 7y

Who knew that headless covers were a thing? 🤓 When you read mostly memoirs like me, you'll see that celebs would rather hold on to their noggins. I searched to no avail. The heads rule in my bookcase. I guess I need to add more sizzle to my #tbr list. Back in my younger days, no guillotine was necessary. The rule of thumb: the steamier the novel, the blurrier the cover! 😏🔥#photoadaynov16 #headlesscovers @RealLifeReading

#FunFridayPhoto Ok. So we all kind of seem to have a bunch of books we snuck read. How has no one mentioned this one! This was like the MOST coveted thing when we were tweens. We would sneak a copy and pass it around and read out loud and gasp and giggle. Well, all of her books were good for sneak-reading, but this was always the prized one.

BookJunkie429 Never read that one, but I did read Valley of the Dolls 8y
CherylDeFranceschi @BookJunkie429 I honestly can't remember reading it! I think we skimmed them for the naughty bits! Valley of the Dolls is the only one I know I actually read all the way through. 8y
courtney I have this book and have been wanting to read it so bad. Jacqueline is my JAM! I just love her. 8y
BookJunkie429 @CherylDeFranceschi I loved Valley of the Dolls! I think I read it when I was around 15 or 16. I even started calling pills "dolls" and thought I was so cool. Haha! 8y
