Trimalchio's Feast
Trimalchio's Feast | Petronius
5 posts | 4 read | 3 to read
'I blush to say what happened next.' A satirical portrait of a drunken, orgiastic Roman banquet, hosted by the grossly ostentatious Trimalchio. Introducing Little Black Classics: 80 books for Penguin's 80th birthday. Little Black Classics celebrate the huge range and diversity of Penguin Classics, with books from around the world and across many centuries. They take us from a balloon ride over Victorian London to a garden of blossom in Japan, from Tierra del Fuego to 16th-century California and the Russian steppe. Here are stories lyrical and savage; poems epic and intimate; essays satirical and inspirational; and ideas that have shaped the lives of millions. Titus Petronius Arbiter (1st century BCE-c.66 CE). Petronius's The Satyricon is also available in Penguin Classics.

I just... I didn't vibe with this book at all. I don't think the translation helped either, because it was all over the place with 60's slang and what I can only presume was an unsuccessful attempt at giving the characters accents.

It was not good, at all.

bookcollecter Awesome...how small are they? Ordered from Penguin directly? 6y
ju.ca.no @bookcollecter 50 pages (ish) each, and quite small. I‘ve received the entire box (first 80 books) as a present, so I don‘t know where they‘ve been purchased... (edited) 6y

I have a busy weekend ahead, so not much reading time.. I‘m trying to sneak in a little reading now, hopefully without being interrupted🙈 the Black Classics are really great inbetween reads, I love them😍

tina_b.ooks I'm currently working at Frick am Graben, where I am responsible for the foreign language section. I always try to have a big selection of the penguin black classics as well as the modern classics. 6y
tina_b.ooks You might also like the vintage minis :) 6y
ju.ca.no @tina_b.ooks I own the box with the first 80😁 and I‘ve already seen the vintage minis! I have my eyes on them and will buy some once my pile of unread books is a bit more manageable🙈 6y

Pickpick

Now I know why F. Scott Fitzgerald originally titled The Great Gatsby Trimalchio in West Egg. The guy really knows how to throw a raucous party.
