Real American: A Memoir | Julie Lythcott-Haims
5 posts | 5 read | 16 to read
A fearless debut memoir in which beloved and bestselling How to Raise an Adult author Julie Lythcott-Haims pulls no punches in her recollections of growing up a biracial black woman in America. Bringing a poetic sensibility to her prose to stunning effect, Lythcott-Haims briskly and stirringly evokes her personal battle with the low self-esteem that American racism routinely inflicts on people of color. The only child of a marriage between an African-American father and a white British mother, she shows indelibly how so-called "micro" aggressions in addition to blunt force insults can puncture a person's inner life with a thousand sharp cuts. Real American expresses also, through Lythcott-Haimss path to self-acceptance, the healing power of community in overcoming the hurtful isolation of being incessantly considered "the other." The author of the New York Times bestselling anti-helicopter parenting manifesto How to Raise an Adult, Lythcott-Haims has written a different sort of book this time out, but one that will nevertheless resonate with the legions of students, educators and parents to whom she is now well known, by whom she is beloved, and to whom she has always provided wise and necessary counsel about how to embrace and nurture their best selves. Real American is an affecting memoir, an unforgettable cri de coeur, and a clarion call to all of us to live more wisely, generously and fully.

So glad I came across this book. What is it like to grow up in a biracial family? Read this book and find out. There was a lot of sadness in this memoir. I remember the ugly things my own family used to say when we passed biracial families in the grocery store. I didn‘t fully understand then, but even as a child that young I knew something was wrong with what they said. It is racist attitudes like that, that are why Julie had the childhood

JenniferEgnor that she did. White People, it doesn‘t have to be this way. Do better. If this book hasn‘t been banned already, it will be soon. Which is exactly why you need to read it. Dismantle white supremacy one conversation at a time. Highly recommended. Shown: the author with her family. 13mo

Not sure how this book slipped by my radar, as it‘s right up my alley. A fantastic memoir, which I listened to on audio, read by the author. What a great experience! Perfectly told scenes from her childhood growing up biracial in all-white areas due to her father‘s job. She vividly describes many other scenes from her life in which race has impacted the situation, including life with her husband and children. Great!

Mehso-so

A mixed race American growing up mostly in all-white Verona, WI and trying to find identity. Maybe thin, but some moving talk on a racism and overall nicely done. She‘s an excellent reader. (Just finished)

Read this book. Listen to what she has to say about living in this world where her skin defines so much about how she is perceived and how society perceives her children. How she was raised by a white mother who wanted her to accept, love and embrace her blackness. How her fathers career kept her in predominantly white areas where she would often be the only black girl. Then see how she grows and embraces her truth! Well written and heatwrenching.

Starting this book now! Growing up Black in the 70s and 80s: a memoir.

Mixedreader She read at the festival I organize! She's great! 7y
TheNextBook @Mixedreader this book is so good! And it is hitting home on so many different levels! Just read a line that said "I don't think of you as black. I think of you as normal." I had a coworker in December tell me she just treats me like I'm white! Have a seat! This still happens! 7y
Libby1 @TheNextBook - I hate that that still happens. I hate that it has ever happened. 7y
diovival @TheNextBook Yiiiiiiiiiiiiiikes 😩 7y
TheNextBook @diovival And I called her out! I said "And that is a problem because I can be black and educated, black and funny, black and many things. I am not one dimensional. You need to unlearn all that shit you learned because it is not ok. It's bullshit. I'm not white. I'm black and you can see me that way!" I will never forget! I was so pissed! I was fuming! Needless to say she lost any association as friend and is just a coworker. 7y
