5 posts | 8 read | 6 to read
A pulse-racing story of Regency romance from one of our best-known and most beloved historical novelists. The shy, young Duke of Sale has never known his parents, Instead, his Grace Adolphus Gillespie Vernon Ware (Gilly for short) has endured twenty-four years of rigorous mollycoddling form his uncle and valet. But his natural diffidence conceals a rebellious spirit. So when Gilly hears of Belinda, the beautiful foundling who appears to be blackmailing his cousin, he absconds with glee. No sooner has he entered this new and dangerous world than he is plunged into a frenzy of intrigue, kidnap and adventure ... For over fifty years, Georgette Heyer was the undisputed queen of historical, romantic fiction. The Foundling shows all of her wonderful talents at their best, and how she won a huge audience that continues to this day.

Oh, I find it hard to rate this book! It started slow, and it has two absolutely annoying side characters. Maybe I should have started with another Heyer with a female main character. I was considering bailing when I feared dumb-as-bread (as we Germans say) Belinda might be the love interest. It got better, and yes, it was entertaining. A pick with lots of flaws.

julesG Dumb-as-bread is one of my favourites. Only topped by: He/she has an IQ of 7, toast has 8. 6y
PickwickPlockPlock @julesG Actually it is unfair to call Belinda dumb-as-bread, because I love bread! 6y
PickwickPlockPlock @Dragon Thanks, I'll keep it in mind! 6y

I'm still here, I've just been quiet because life is pretty exhausting right now and I cannot find the time to read. Today I played with my Big Band at a church festival and between sets I browsed the used books stall and bought this. I never read anything by Heyer before, is it any good? I have seen her books often recommended.

shanaqui I love Heyer's books, particularly the ones that also contain mystery or adventure like The Talisman Ring. 😁 6y
PickwickPlockPlock @shanaqui Good to know! I'm really curious about this book. 6y
shanaqui She always makes me laugh at least! I'm not sure if I've read The Foundling though... 🤔 6y

Moray_Reads I haven't read this one but I've found all her others to be enormous fun. Downright silly in many cases but wholly enjoyable 6y
PickwickPlockPlock @shanaqui @Moray_Reads I didn't know that her books are funny, I mentally filed them under historical romances. Sounds like the perfect book for my coming train rides... 6y
Moray_Reads There's plenty of regency romance but lots of humour too! 6y
shanaqui Definitely romance as well, but a lot of humour, some of it quite wry. My wife always knows I'm reading Heyer from the number of giggles. 6y
UwannaPublishme Hope you get some relaxation and more reading time soon. Your music fest sounds so cool. Have fun! 6y
PickwickPlockPlock @UwannaPublishme Thank you! I don't have to work next week, hopefully I will have time to read then. 6y

A Heyer written from the male's perspective? There Foundling follows the adventures of the young Duke of Sale who is tired of being cosseted and escorted and protected at every turn and wants to be Mr Dash of No Where In Particular. While making his escape from his well meaning entourage he finds himself on an adventure with a runaway a Foundling and a rouge. What follows is a romp unlike any other Heyer.
