Michigan in Literature is a guide to more than one thousand literary and dramatic works set in Michigan from its pre-territorial days to the present. Imaginative, narrative, dramatic, and lyrical creations that have Michigan settings, characters, subjects, and themes are organized into sixteen chapters on topics such as Indians in Michigan, settlers who came to Michigan, diversity in the state, the timber industry, the Great Lakes, crime in Michigan literature, Detroit, and Michigan poetry. In this most complete work to date, Clarence Andrews has assembled the literary reputation of a state. He illustrates, with a wide variety of literary works, that Michigan is more than just a builder of automobiles, a producer of apples and cherries, a supplier of copper and lumber, and the home of great athletes. It is also a state that has playedand continues to playan important role in the production of American literature. To qualify for inclusion, a work or a significant part of it has to be set in Michigan. Andrews shows how novelists, dramatists, poets, and short story writers have created their particular images of Michigan by using and interpreting the history of the stateits land and waters, people, events, ideas, philosophies, and policiessometimes factually, sometimes modified or distorted, and sometimes fancied or imagined. Biographical information is featured about authors, editors, and compilers, who range in fame from Ernest Hemingway and Elmore Leonard to persons long forgotten. The published opinions and judgments of reputable critics and scholars are also presented.

ValerieAndBooks Not sure if you know but I used to live in Michigan (16 years)! I still miss it often. I had an oven mitt like this until it wore out! One side had the LP and the other had the UP on it. 7y
Jess_Read_This @AJBowers 😂😂😂 glove serendipity for me. 7y
Jess_Read_This @ValerieAndBooks I didn't know you had lived in MI. Whereabouts? Those oven mitts sound awesome too. 7y
ValerieAndBooks Yes, from 1990-2006. Most of that time was in Ann Arbor! Hubby was an engineer for Ford then. 7y

Hey #Michigan Littens! I've noticed there are quite a few of us and a few people have mentioned a meet up. Would anyone be interested in a Michigan Litsy group? A book club? A meet up? (or several meet-ups because Michigan is big). Tag any #MittenLittens (or nearby) that you know or comment with where you are in Michigan and if you'd like a group/club/meet up or something else!
I'm based in the Detroit area, Macomb County.

Wife Also in Macomb County. Would like meet ups and book club. I work weekends (Fri, Sat, Sun 12 hour shifts). I know weekends are convenient for most, but maybe an occasional weekday eve? Maybe we can trade our used books? 7y
carmens.library I'm in Wayne County! I would love to join a book club or meet up! 7y
OrangeMooseReads I'm in Mecosta county and would love to join in a meet up 7y

jfalkens A meet up is tricky for me, it sounds like tons of fun tho. My husband works second shift and we only have 1 car and he gets mandated for the weekend sometimes. 7y
ScientistSam I travel to Ann Arbor a fair amount and would love to meet some Littens when I'm there! 7y
CrowCAH #MittenLitten here! Would love to meet up with fellow Michiganders!!! Or a Michigan read would be fun! 7y
lynneamch Love the mitts! I'm visiting in state just through Friday, June 30. I stopped in the St. Clair Shores library today. Didn't somebody just post a pic of it recently? As for @CrowCAH 's suggestion of a Michigan read, maybe 7y
