It was truly truly amazing. Beautifully written, I could not put it down. How interesting to wittness that these two people simply became crazy and lonely because of their stubborness.

I appreciated this book more than The Golden Notebook, but it was not enjoyable to experience the lives of Dick & Mary Turner. It begins with Mary‘s murder and then goes back to tell the story of her life from childhood through marriage to her death. It completely immerses the reader in the oppressive heat and continual decline of the characters on a farm in southern Africa.

I‘ve only read the first chapter, but I think this is going to a difficult yet intriguing read. #1001books
It was chosen this month for my #Reading1001 #TBRTakedown read, and as I began I also realized it is set in what is now #Zimbabwe meaning I can add it to my #ReadingAfrica2022 list.

I need to read this! Sounds very interesting!

My January stats. The Grass is Singing is by far my favorite read. I will read another book by Doris Lessing this year and I look forward to it. Happy February reading.

I found this movie streaming on Amazon Prime. It is a good adaptation of Doris Lessing's novel. It was shot in Africa which gives it an authentic feel. Recommended if you read the book. Not sure how much people would like it if you haven't read the book.

Set in colonial South Africa, the novel opens with the murder of Mary Turner. This is a tragic tale, the novel sets about telling the life of Mary Turner. The landscape is a big part of the story and the weather, especially the heat, is described often. The book was originally published in 1950 and I can tell that Doris Lessing was ahead of her time. Themes of racism, feminism, equality, colonialism all come to play in this story. #1001books

Slower month due to more work and less relaxation. 🤨 Lessing and Walton made my month. All women authors so that‘s cool. #octoberwrapup

The Grass is Singing is a dark and gritty tale of racism and white social classes in the former African country of Rhodesia, colonized by the British.
I thought the writing was great and it was hard for me to put it down. The blisteringly hot setting makes it a good book to read in the heat of the summer, but it‘s certainly not a light beach read. It will make you uncomfortable but will never bore you. Looking forward to reading more by Lessing.

A snowy Saturday is a perfect day for Keenan the Dobie‘s nap and for Dog Dad to finish this dark but really good (so far) novel by Doris Lessing.

There are some books you read and they change your view on things. These books touch you and make you see things a little differently. The Grass is Singing is one of those books. If you read this let me know what you think.

Wow, what a book. I have a feeling I‘ll be thinking about this one for a while.

It‘s so satisfying being totally absorbed in a book on a hot summer day. The Grass is Singing is very thought provoking. It‘s been a long time since I‘ve read about characters who manage to be so simultaneously off-putting and sympathetic. 🤔

I‘m dog sitting for the same people I was dog sitting for about 2 years ago when I first joined Litsy. It‘s so much easier to focus on a good book when you‘re living at someone else‘s house and not thinking about how you really should be vacuuming or one of any of a zillion tasks you can think of to do when you‘re at home. So happy #litsyversary to me, I guess. 😀

This was one powerful novel. Following Mary as she lives a free young adulthood followed by a marriage of living in poverty, Lessing‘s book is so important regarding race relations in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). This was a heart-wrenching book exploring race and descent into madness. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Some relaxing reading time while listening to the rain outside 🌿🌧☔️

I am finding this book difficult to read. I find that I cannot read for long before I become too upset by the racist attitudes of the rather unlovable main characters. Luckily, it is a short book, so I'll persevere.

This was a nice bout of depression reading...😕Honestly, it was good. You can just feel the loneliness. 79/1,001 #1001Books
Perhaps it is not such a bad marriage after all? There are innumerable marriages where two people, both twisted and wrong in their depths, are well matched, making each other miserable in the way they need, in the way the pattern of their life demands.

#recommensday pick: The Grass is Singing by Doris Lessing. This short novel is amazing in its description and emotion as it follows a lonely housewife in the southern African desert of what was once Rhodesia.

Totally forgot about book club so trying to quickly read this by Tuesday! Has anyone read it?
