Why Did You Lie?
Why Did You Lie? | Yrsa Sigurdardottir
9 posts | 7 read | 8 to read
A chilling thriller from the author of THE SILENCE OF THE SEA, winner of the 2015 Petrona Award for best Scandinavian Crime Novel. A journalist on the track of an old case attempts suicide. An ordinary couple return from a house swap in the states to find their home in disarray and their guests seemingly missing. Four strangers struggle to find shelter on a windswept spike of rock in the middle of a raging sea. They have one thing in common: they all lied. And someone is determined to punish them... WHY DID YOU LIE is a terrifying tale of long-delayed retribution from Iceland's Queen of Suspense.

Panpan

I love a good mystery, but I think I need to accept that psychological thrillers are not a subgenre for me. I think I might have liked this one better if it were written as a ghost story instead. But as it stands I could feel this building towards a conclusion I wasn't going to like, and I was right about that. I only average 1-2 pans a year though so I have no right to complain!

So...in Iceland is getting margherita pizza a sign that your pizza tastes leave something to be desired? Or is this a common Italian view that citizens in European countries are more aware of (the pizza was ordered by American tourists)? In the U.S. it's a delicacy- we have several pizza chains that serve far worse varieties 😳

LeahBergen Hmm... maybe it‘s supposed to imply that they weren‘t sophisticated because they didn‘t appreciate the pizza and binned it? I‘m not reading the book, though, so 🤷🏻‍♀️. 😆😆 5y
Billypar @LeahBergen That never even occurred to me- of course that's it 🤦 The phrasing was throwing me off! 5y
LeahBergen I really only took time to ponder it because I love Margherita pizzas so much! 😂😂 5y

Billypar @LeahBergen Agreed! It never occurred to me that someone would order one not knowing what it was, be dissatisfied, and toss it (this isn't actually what happens in the novel but apparently that's what this character is thinking). 5y
batsy Now I have so many questions too! I too love a good pizza margherita *drools* 5y
Velvetfur Hmm, here in the UK, myself and most people I know think of a Margherita as 'just that? You're not going to put anything else on it?!' because a Margherita is seen as a base and then you add all the veggies and meat etc! I personally could'nt eat 'just' a Margherita unless there was no other vegetarian option on the menu 😂 5y
Billypar @batsy Yes- it's one of my favorite pizzas 🤤🍕 5y
Billypar @Velvetfur Interesting- that's how many people over here feel about regular cheese pizza, but I've never seen anyone put toppings on a margherita- it's considered a specialty option. Sounds delicious though! 5y
Velvetfur @Billypar Well, all pizza is delicious really isn't it....?! 😂 I want pizza now hehehe 😁 5y
kspenmoll Now I want this pizza! 5y

Pickpick

The narrative is slowly paced and there isn't much action. There were a few spots where the wording seemed a little unnatural or uneven but otherwise the translation came across well. I was constantly wondering how the three storylines would eventually link. And then when they did, boy howdy! Pace suddenly picked up, or maybe I was just reading faster. I was on my couch reading when my daughter called me and I jumped when my phone went off!

#bookmail Nordic noir via Singapore arrived for me today- thanks @GatheringBooks for this giveaway!
I would also like to plug the challenge that said giveaway came from #Litworld2018GB: really enjoying it- very flexible, as you can see your own target, but also fun to play and keeps me accountable for varying my cultural reading diet. Stopping in my home country at the moment, but I can't wait to see where I'm headed next 😎🛣️🚤

GatheringBooks awesome! glad to see it made it there. :) 6y
BarbaraBB What is LitWorld2018GB? 6y
Billypar @BarbaraBB A reading challenge to read more books from multiple countries throughout the year: there are goal ranges for number of countries to read from that you can choose as a commitment - details are here: https://gatheringbooks.org/literary-voyage-around-the-world-reading-challenge-20... 6y
BarbaraBB Thanks, I must look into that. It sounds interesting and I read a lot from different countries. 6y

The trouble with liking this Icelandic author is waiting for books to be translated. Very confusing at first. A cat dies.

Tasau @LILA_LU: Ich werde berichten😀Welchen Reader hast Du? 7y
See All 9 Comments

Buechersuechtling ? Ich dachte bisher immer, ich sei Eremitin in ??? Schißhasenhausen. Nein❓ Welcome to my world. 7y
? Ich hab nur "Feuerkind" und "Carrie" „geschafft“. ? 7y
