The Stone in the Skull | Elizabeth Bear
9 posts | 6 read | 10 to read
Hugo Awardwinning author Elizabeth Bear returns to her critically acclaimed epic fantasy world of the Eternal Sky with a brand new trilogy. The Stone in the Skull, the first volume in her new trilogy, takes readers over the dangerous mountain passes of the Steles of the Sky and south into the Lotus Kingdoms. The Gage is a brass automaton created by a wizard of Messaline around the core of a human being. His wizard is long dead, and he works as a mercenary. He is carrying a message from a the most powerful sorcerer of Messaline to the Rajni of the Lotus Kingdom. With him is The Dead Man, a bitter survivor of the body guard of the deposed Uthman Caliphate, protecting the message and the Gage. They are friends, of a peculiar sort. They are walking into a dynastic war between the rulers of the shattered bits of a once great Empire. The Lotus Kingdoms #1 The Stone in the Skull The Eternal Sky Trilogy #1 Range of Ghosts #2 Shattered Pillars #3 Steles of the Sky At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

The Stone in the Skull | Elizabeth Bear

Mixed emotions. There was a lot of it I didn't understand. I need to read the first trilogy Range of Ghosts. Seems to be set in the same universe and perhaps that will explain some things for me, like why is he 'A Dead Man' and what does that mean?

Anyway, very nicely written with a slow but good plot. Slower for me because of so much pondering on what the heck is happening now and what the heck is the Godmade.

I saw RED-STAINED WINGS on the new book shelf and always up for a trilogy, I grabbed STONE ON THE SKULL.

An interesting story, although I could have used a cast list to keep the early chapters straight. Of course, I haven‘t read the earlier trilogy, so that may be my fault.

Although not ranking as a pick, I am reading the next in the series so it captured my interest 👀

CaitlinR Oops, typo! The book is in fact Stone IN the Skull. Apologies, and thank you all for not pointing fingers. 👈 5y

I‘m giving this a 3.5 star rating. Out of the 4 books I have read back to back by Bear this was the least Boring but still had it moments where she over described everything. The characters are more likable (expect for the drug addicted queen) and the love story once again was way too quickly brought on. Overall it was decent. I‘m glad to be taking a break from Bear‘s work though now. I have till May to decide if I wish to continue.

Sweetkokoro Also I will say this, those who say you need to read the first series are liars cuz all this book does is just mention a few places. You really don‘t need to bore your self with The Eternal Sky Trilogy to follow this one. 5y

So I completed The Enteral Sky trilogy by Elizabeth Bear JUST, so I could read The Stone in the Skull because that was the book that originally caught my eye. This book is part of a sequel that comes after that Trilogy. So once again here I am reading Bears work, so far I have to say this story is starting it out much more interesting and I‘m actually wanting to read it, so let‘s see what happens. This is an updated Map of the world she created.

Pickpick

Audible, who has not yet learned any better, offers me two free audiobooks every 6 months or so to try out their service. I always take the free books and cancel! This time I got Elizabeth Bear‘s The Stone in the Skull since my local library doesn‘t have it. I started listening today and I am so enjoying it. There‘s an automaton carrying a vital message, a dragon attack, and an omen of blood and death all in the first two hours!
