Katherine Yeboah's marriage to Solomon Vanderpuye is all the talk of Accra high society. But when it becomes apparent that Katherine is infertile, Solomon's extended family accuses her of being a witch, hounding her until the relationship is so soured Solomon feels compelled to order Katherine out of the house they shared. Alone on her last night there, Katherine is brutally murdered by an intruder. Chief Inspector Darko Dawson of the Ghanaian federal police has personal as well as professional reasons to find the killer fast: Katherine was the first cousin of his wife, Christine, who is devastated by the tragedy. As Darko investigates, he discovers that many people close to Katherine had powerful motives to kill her, including: Solomon, her husband; James Bentsi-Enchill, her lawyer and ex-lover; and her filthy rich pastor, Bishop Clem Howard-Mills. In order to expose the truth, Darko must confront the pivotal role religion plays in Ghana--and wrestle with his old demons the investigation stirs up.

This was a weaker installment of Quartey‘s Darko Dawson series, but I found the cultural information around Christianity in Ghana to be intriguing and thought-provoking. This seems like the least put together novel of the series as I solved the mystery before the reveal and it wasn‘t that exciting. The book ended on a cliffhanger though, so I hope we‘ll see a return to this series despite Quartey moving on to another series. 3⭐️

It's been awhile since I've read a mystery book, and while it follows some of the usual structures it was different enough to be good. I like how it was set in Ghana and that influenced the story for the best. A great short read!

This is the first book I‘ve read by Quartey and it will not be the last—a swiftly-paced murder mystery set in Ghana 🇬🇭 with several likely suspects and a cliffhanger ending. This is the fourth and latest installment of the Detective Darko Dawson series and I enjoyed this character very much. Highly recommended!!!

Trying to be healthy (cottage cheese) but unwilling to totally break from DDP. Review list to the left... I‘m a bit behind. Story of my life...

Lunch date. (I love reading mysteries set around the world.)

rubyslippersreads Great cover! 7y
HardcoverHearts Same- I find reading foreign mysteries gives great insight into how other countries view law and order and all the nuances about the criminal justice system. Fascinating! 7y
Matilda @HardcoverHearts exactly. Plus usually also a peek into other cultures and sometimes they're structured differently so harder for me to automatically know how it'll end from the beginning. 7y
HardcoverHearts Great point! 7y

No, seriously: I AM sad my librarian friends don't have time to read all the ARCs they get. Really. Why are you smiling at me like that? #bookhaul
