A land under occupation. A legendary sword. A young man's journey to find his destiny. Aren has lived by the rules all his life. He's never questioned it; that's just the way things are. But then his father is executed for treason, and he and his best friend Cade are thrown into a prison mine, doomed to work until they drop. Unless they can somehow break free . . . But what lies beyond the prison walls is more terrifying still. Rescued by a man who hates him yet is oath-bound to protect him, pursued by inhuman forces, Aren slowly accepts that everything he knew about his world was a lie. The rules are not there to protect him, or his people, but to enslave them. A revolution is brewing, and Aren is being drawn into it, whether he likes it or not. The key to the revolution is the Ember Blade. The sword of kings, the Excalibur of his people. Only with the Ember Blade in hand can their people be inspired to rise up . . . but it's locked in an impenetrable vault in the most heavily guarded fortress in the land. All they have to do now is steal it . . .

This book has finally taken hold of me. I put it down a couple of times to read a couple other books that I was really looking forward to but now I'm full steam ahead!

Its really nice reading a more traditional fantasy again. It's not all grimdark or trying to be something new and different. It embraces the classic tropes and is doing it well.

I friggen love fantasy (and granola with yogurt and bananas). 😜

Got my ass kicked at work tonight. 😖

Running a kitchen in a busy ass restaurant can be a tough gig. What was I thinking? 😳

knowing that this is what waited for me...some tea...my book...music...my bed...it kept me going. 😅

One more day to go until a day off.

There is something so special about cracking the window on a cold night and burying yourself under a mountain of blankets with an 800 page book in your lap and a steaming cup of hot chocolate at your side. 📖

VioletBramble I‘m on my way to lunch but now I‘m gonna have to stop by Starbucks and see if they have these cookies. The only cookies I like more are the gingerbread reindeer they have at Christmas. 6y

A new epic fantasy with lots of classic fantasy vibes, THE EMBER BLADE was a fun read. I really liked that it had a few more shades of grey than you usually find in classic-style fantasy, and I loved how much the main character grew throughout the story. My only niggle is the lack of strong female characters who really affected the story which, sadly, is too often the case with quest fantasies.

twohectobooks I read his YA duology called Malice and it was pretty decent but not mind blowing. Apparently he‘s written this and a ton of other stuff too, which I did not realize! 6y
Lucy_Anywhere @twohectobooks I would say the same about this. I enjoyed it and I liked that it had the feel of a classic adventure fantasy with a bit of a modern twist, but it didn't blow my mind! 6y

I'm rather pleased with myself this week! I finished two books, and made a solid start on a third. Also, I did three yoga sessions, and two stints of housework as I'm moving on Tuesday 😬
