Why Won't You Apologize?
Why Won't You Apologize?: Healing Big Betrayals and Everyday Hurts | Harriet Lerner
9 posts | 10 read | 28 to read
"Lerner has been studying apologies--and why some people won't give them--for more than two decades. Now she offers ... stories and ... theory that bring home how much the simple apology matters and what is required for healing when the hurt we've inflicted (or received) is far from simple. Readers will learn how to craft a deeply meaningful 'I'm sorry' and avoid apologies that only deepen the original injury

A friend was raving about a particular episode of Brene Brown‘s podcast. I listened and learned so much that I ordered this book. It is written by the author that was being interviewed. Great advice! Relatable, concise, a game changer for me.

I read this hoping to heal a disconnect in the way my mother and I communicate. While the author‘s advice is well grounded, I was hoping to learn a more straightforward, non-“therapy speak” way to talk to my mom about apologies b/c my mother hates “therapy speak”.

This would be good to buddy listen with a partner or family member who you have apology-related issues with or just for personal growth about how to craft an apology or ask for one. 4⭐️

AlaMich I like that, “apology-related issues.” I know a few of those folks...😒 (edited) 4y
Megabooks @AlaMich lol! Trying to think of a diplomatic way to put it! 😂😂 4y

Helpful if you are ready for it. I‘m ready to be a better apologizer. I wish the people I need apologies from would read it as well, but I guess I can only do what I can do. I appreciate her explanation that apologies do not necessarily have to lead to forgiveness and/or reconnection. There were some scenarios in the book where I felt the person didn‘t deserve an apology, but I guess what we deserve and what we need aren‘t always the same thing.

mcipher I feel like I could really use this - as well as some other people in my life!! 6y

1️⃣ Chronic lateness and non-apologies “I‘m sorry you feel that way”
2️⃣ Depends on the kind 3️⃣ Muffin, my first dog. She came with that name, but it fit her 4️⃣ Historical romance 5️⃣ #friyayintro @jesshowbooks

YouReadMyEyes I hate that non-apology! I answer them by saying “You mean you‘re sorry you made me feel that way?” 😳 6y
CouronneDhiver My family are professionals at the non apology! Ugh 😑 6y

Sorry, I am just too angry and immature for all this 'be the bigger person' shenanigans.

josie281 And that's totally ok. 7y
arlenefinnigan I just can't see myself having those kind of conversations. My family would think I was ill. 7y

So much goodness in this short volume. How to give a sincere apology; how to accept an apology; even how to reject a non-apology. I have found so much insight and wisdom in Lerner's earlier books. This one may be my favorite yet because it deals so specifically with a narrow issue.

Laura317 Adding for my two SILs who are adding too much drama to our family. 7y
Jess_Read_This Brene Brown had posted a great short interview with her. It was insightful. I love Brene Brown and to hear her praise for the author and this book really was a strong endorsement for me. 7y
MyNamesParadise I have this checked out from the library but haven't gotten around to it yet! 7y
