In this story set in East Texas, a local seamstress named Chintana finds herself responsible for five orphans who are not only captivated by a storytellers tale of vengeance but by the long black box he sets before them. As midnight approaches, the box is opened, a fateful dare is made, and the children as well as Chintana come face to face with the consequences of a malice retold and now foretold.

One Halloween night, in a South Texas ranch camper trailer, a woman named Sarah finds herself rereading a book about one Halloween night at a party at an East Texas ranch house. 🎃

This was my second time reading this book, the last time was in 2013. MZD books are different from anything else, that‘s for sure!

Have you read MZD? You should. His novels are both stories and pieces of art. It‘s hard to describe. This one was perfect for Halloween. A birthday party at an orphanage turns dark when a mysterious storyteller appears to entertain the children... or is it to teach a lesson? MZD is an author that you experience. And this tale of vengeance was an absolute gem.

I didn't enjoy this as much as The Familiar, but still liked it. Maybe 3. 5/5 stars

#OctoberTBR | Looking forward to reading through The Fifty Year sword later this month with the reading group. 😃📖

OSChamberlain Heyyyy you‘re in the group! I‘m so excited. It‘ll be my first time through the book! 6y
shadowspeak17 @OSChamberlain It‘ll be my first time through too. I‘m really excited! 😃 6y
OSChamberlain @shadowspeak17 I‘ve thought about reading it once quickly before the group discussion just so I could add more, but I‘m still trying to finish my reread of v4 and want to start that copy of v5 that I may or may not have gotten my hands on 🤷🏻‍♂️ 6y
shadowspeak17 @OSChamberlain I am super jealous that you have v5 already. 😒😂 Anyway, yeah, I considered doing that too, but I‘m already reading two other books, so I‘m just going to wait and read it when everyone else does. 6y
OSChamberlain @shadowspeak17 Only a couple more weeks till it‘s out!! I can‘t wait for the official release 😁 6y

Do many people hate this. I do enjoy Danielewski's total commitment to going his own way. Many hate his postmodern trickery, postmodernists hate him for not being postmodern enough. Enjoy it for what it is, a strange, eerie fable about revenge and forgiveness dressed up in fragmented POVs and BEAUTIFUL stitchwork illustration.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Always been intimidated by the format of this one. I really liked the style of Only Revolutions though. Maybe I should give it a shot. 7y

50%. Yep, that's the only word on this spread. It gets intriguing at this point. Gotta continue right after posting this.

A slow burner... Stay with it, as there is a message - if you care to look. Subtle Danielewski.

Pluto thoroughly enjoyed this book. While visually appealing, it pulled you in like a campfire story that you hang on to. A confusing start blossoms into a beautifully jarring ending.
