Logan starts off his senior year of high school broken hearted having been dumped by his gf of 3yrs. But a new girl shows up and she‘s tall, quirky, and fun. And no matter how much she tries to keep things platonic, Logan kisses her and that‘s when she has to tell him she was born a boy. I really liked this book a lot. There are complaints about Logan, we‘re in his head the whole way through. He‘s an 18 yo from rural Missouri. It‘s a double 👇🏼

Reggie edged sword. Most people want to judge him for not being PC but he is also the guy we need to meet queer people in the middle. I found him hilarious and contemplative. This story broke my heart because you want better for trans kids and the world 14 years after this book was written is worse off for them. Pick! 2mo

CarolynM Fabulous review. Stacked. And you‘re right, things should have got better rather than worse. I really don‘t understand why it‘s so controversial. 2mo

Reggie @TrishB @CarolynM @squirrelbrain @Ruthiella @Suet624 Thank you ladies. It‘s sad to say but the weekend I read this, a candidate for Secretary of State in Missouri, the state where this book takes place, ran an ad where she has a flamethrower and is burning a queer book. 2mo
Ruthiella @Reggie That‘s awful. 😞 2mo
squirrelbrain WTF - what is WRONG with people?! 2mo
TrishB 😢 no words. Well I have many tbh. But I definitely agree it‘s getting worse. 2mo

Rissreads What!!!!!!!!!! Why do people feel the need to control what other people read? This truly saddens me. 2mo

High praise for Brian Katcher in writing this book. From the perspective of a cis-gender boy falling in love with a transgender girl. The evolution of Logan's maturity is spectacular. There were times I truly hated Logan for his close-mindedness, but Katcher wrote him to think through his mistakes and finally accept Sage and his love for her. #BBRC -about transgender @LibrarianRyan @Sarahreadstoomuch #YApril @Allylu

Allylu Nice to hear there are books about real people. 3y

This was a hard one to listen to. I have a gender fluid kid in my life that I love very much. I hope he never feels desperate and alone. And I worry about his safety all the time. Other people just really suck sometimes. It was an ok story, but the emotions attached to it were a little hard to take. Not the books fault. Or maybe it was supposed to make me feel that way.

I spent the morning running errands and cleaning the house, with an audiobook. I‘m not sure if I like this one yet. But I was in need and it was available at the library. Lol

So many issues with this book. Transphobia, homophobia, fat-shaming... And that's just to start. I hated this one.
If you have time for it, I posted a longer, more detailed review here: https://bennilovesbooks.wordpress.com/2017/08/11/review-almost-perfect-by-brian-...
I recommend reading If I Was Your Girl by Meredith Russo instead. It handles this topic MUCH better.

This novel is tough. On one hand, it's a powerful story about a boy falling for a transgender female. On the other, some aspects weren't handled super well and some were difficult to read. I considered stopping a couple of times, but the fact it won the Stonewall award kept me reading. Overall I'm glad I finished because though flawed, it's also an interesting story that illustrates some of the struggles transgender youth face.

enidkeaner I felt the same way when I read this. 7y

Coming of age story of a transgender born-as-boy and her friend slash boyfriend slash angry not boyfriend slash protector. Very well done. Evocative. Heartbreaking. Hopeful. (This is not a spoiler. It's all on the cover copy.)
