Letters from Pemberley
Letters from Pemberley: The First Year | Jane Dawkins
9 posts | 6 read | 7 to read
In this continuation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, one of the best-loved novels in the English language, Elizabeth Bennet finds herself in a very different league of wealth and privilege, now as Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy and mistress of Pemberley. Writing to her sister, Jane, she confides her uncertainty and anxieties, and describes the everyday of her new life. Her first year at Pemberley is sometimes bewildering, but Lizzy's spirited sense of humor and satirical eye never desert her. Incorporating Jane Austen's own words and characters from her other works, the book is a literary patchwork quilt piecing together the story of Lizzy's first eventful year as Mrs. Darcy.

This book was so much better than I was expecting! This is written as letters from Elizabeth following the end of P&P. I loved it all. I even figured out which characters from JA's other books were re-named and mentioned as new characters based on how they acted, or decisions they were making. It also had a great feel good ending. I highly recommend this for P&P or JA fans. (Raspberry zinger herbal tea with raspberry honey and then iced.)

It can't be worse than Longbourn right? #tbrpile

Lindy I enjoyed Longbourn. Perhaps it is better for readers like me who aren‘t fans of Jane Austen? 3y
bookishbitch @Lindy Probably. It wasn't the writing, it was the stomping over P&P that I hated. Making a good character a terrible person and such. If it had not been connected to P&P I might have enjoyed it. 3y
Caroline2 I hated Longbourn too. 🙄 3y

Lindy @bookishbitch I still remember the violent reaction a friend had to one of our book club picks. She was upset about the way her love of Little Women would forever be marred by the novel that imagined the life of the girls‘ father: 3y
bookishbitch @Caroline2 Because of the P&P connection? 3y
bookishbitch @Lindy I'm lucky in that my brain can reject the books I don't want to be related to one another. March looks interesting. 3y
Caroline2 @Lindy Oh really? I‘ve had March on my tbr shelf for a while but now I‘m wondering if I should read it? I loved Little Women! 3y
Caroline2 @bookishbitch Nah, more cause it was boring I think! 😆 I can‘t remember much about it now? 🤷‍♀️ 3y
bookishbitch @Caroline2 I agree that it was slow. I listened to it while driving. Not sure if I might have dnf'd otherwise. 3y

Pride and Prejudice is one book I adore and reread often. I tried reading many adaptation with no success, I disliked all I read. But, Letters from Pemberley is a lovely, fun read and it has the essence of Jane Austen‘s novel. Through the letters from Elizabeth to Jane we see how family and friends are important, and those relationships are not perfect but, they have learned to grow and settle into them. I highly recommend it to all Austen fans.

Never wander through the book section at job lots unless you actually want to buy a book. Or maybe that's just me. #dealoftheday
