Lunch Poems
Lunch Poems | Frank O'Hara
11 posts | 13 read | 9 to read
Important poems by the late New York poet published in The New American Poetry, Evergreen Review, Floating Bear and stranger places.Often this poet, strolling through the noisy splintered glare of a Manhattan noon, has paused at a sample Olivetti to type up thirty or forty lines of ruminations, or pondering more deeply has withdrawn to a darkened ware- or firehouse to limn his computed misunderstandings of the eternal questions of life, coexistence, and depth, while never forgetting to eat lunch, his favorite meal.

I've been doing a low-key version of The Sealey Challenge this month. Instead of reading a collection of poetry a day in August, I'm trying to read a few collections before month's end. This is #6. And what a fun, razzle-dazzle, gee whiz, vibrant bunch of poems, and a real change from the poetry I normally gravitate to.
This was my #jolabokaflod gift from a few years back. Finally getting around to reading it! 🤓

vivastory Lana Turner has collapsed! 2y
merelybookish @vivastory Apparently he whipped that one off while on the ferry. #genius 2y
vivastory Absolutely a genius. His spontaneity didn't always land for me, but when it did it really floored me!! 2y

#NationalPoetryMonth Day 5: This poem has all of the elements that I love about Frank O'Hara's poetry: an informal chatty tone, the discursive lines, the pop culture references, the humor that also hints at more serious layers.

Leftcoastzen 💗💗💗 2y
Leftcoastzen I suddenly remembered that Lunch Poems was published by City Lights in the pocket poets series! 2y
vivastory @Leftcoastzen It was! One of my favorite volumes 2y

Lunch Poems on break while at work. I did not see this coming...

DivaDiane Whoa. What was that? 6y
Trashcanman 👁️👁️🤗👊🏼👋🏼🤗🤔🤯🍻💛 6y
jmofo @DivaDiane & @Trashcanman I couldn‘t‘ve said it better! I read it and reread it and read it again. I went on and read the next one and it was like the first couple and it felt like the coziest overstuffed chair I wish I had after this‘n. I thought mebbe Richard Brautigan and Jack Kerouac snuck this one in. Fun surprise. 6y
jmofo Although, I think “Thundering windows of hell” might be my new favorite thing to mutter under my breath at work. 🤓 6y
