An enjoyable mystery about the recently retired inspector Wexford helping to solve a case in London. Apparently this is a kind of sequel to one of Rendell's psychological thrillers.

A lot of people reviewed this book negatively, but I enjoyed it. I wonder if somebody the errors people complained about were corrected in the paperback edition or if they refer to the intentional errors Rendell seems to incorporate into most of her Wexford books. ⬇️

zsuzsanna_reads Characters, including Wexford, often get details or names wrong in dialogue or when their thoughts are described. Which, to me, just adds to the realism. 5y

This has to be one of the worst books I've tried to read. Couldn't get halfway thru. No character development and writing is weird.

Teresereading I finished it, but I found the plot/editing great errors in the opening chapters annoying. It was very complicated and i wasn‘t 100% sure/satisfied that all the loose end were tied up correctly at the end. After I finished it 8 learned that it was a sequel to a non-Wexford title by Rendell 6y
