Odessa Stories
Odessa Stories | Isaac Babel
6 posts | 4 read | 7 to read
'Everyone makes mistakes, even God.' In the original Odessa Stories collection published in 1931, Babel describes the life of the fictional Jewish mob boss Benya Krik - one of the great anti-heroes of Russian literature - and his gang in the ghetto of Moldavanka, around the time of the October Revolution. Praised by Maxim Gorky and considered one of the great masterpieces of twentieth-century Russian literature, this is the first ever stand-alone collection of all Babel's narratives set in the city, and includes the original stories as well as later tales. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Mehso-so

Finished another read for #JoyousJanuary. I attended a book club discussion of Odessa Stories last night, and while I liked this book a little bit, the discussion made me realize that much was lost in translation. Luckily, there was someone in the discussion that read it in its original language and clarified a lot that helped express the true humor/meaning of the stories.
@Andrew65

Morr_Books If you read this book, make sure you get the one translated by Boris Dralyuk not the one I read that was translated by Peter Constantine. 1y
Andrew65 Well done, translated books can often lose something. 👏👏👏 1y

Getting in some vitamin D with my morning reading on this beautiful summer-like day. A very early flight Friday morning kept me from the @RoscoeBooks Classics in Brief Book Club on Thursday but I'm still going to finish this month's selection, which I'm really enjoying. The next meeting is June 8th. Join us if you're in Chicago! We're reading Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin.

Starting #readathon weekend right with this pretty little book, the next selection for the @RoscoeBooks Classics in Brief Book Club. #bathandbook #bookandbath #bookandwine

BooksMcD Lovely picture! How do you keep the book from getting wet?! I always opt for audiobooks in the tub. 7y
Lola Thanks :) I've been lucky so far...I did buy the waterproof Nook, but I've yet to take it in the bath. I've put my Kindle in ziplock before, but I usually do print in the tub. 7y

Pickpick

Another lovely little book from Pushkin Press. Drakulyk's translation reads wonderfully and his introduction is essential. While I found the tales of the gangster Benya Krik a little tedious after the first couple it's the second half, on childhood, that really shines. Funny, horrifying, sudden striking moments of lyricism. #TacklingTheTBR

saresmoore Great review. I'm obviously adding it to my TBR. It's like we just pass around great books one by one, maintaining just enough balance in a world of precariously towering to-read stacks. 7y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore isn't it wonderful? I've never been able to do book clubs, they're too rigid, I just want to talk about books in general. ❤ Litsy 7y
Hobbinol That's another stack for me! And nicely worded equilibrium @saresmoore ! 7y
