This book by Shusaku Endo did not impact me as strongly as his book Silence, but it was a very thoughtful book. It considers spiritual questions through the stories of four Japanese tourists visiting the Ganges River in India.

A very interesting study in faith as seen through the eyes of a group of Japanese tourists to India as they recall pivotal moments of their lives, experiences, and their personal struggles as they try to reconnect with past acquaintances, past loves, and reconcile past traumas through the lens of different faiths and depths of faith as they visit the intersection of Asian faith, with Buddhism, Catholicism, and Hinduism.

saresmoore Wow, this sounds really neat. 6y
Daisey I‘ve seen a few good reviews of this lately and may need to see if I can find a library copy. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Daisey It was a choice for the #Reading1001 group this month, so that‘s probably why it‘s been showing up a bunch. 6y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @saresmoore I really liked the religious questioning parts of it, but I personally found the gender roles a bit stereotyped so just be forewarned there. Nothing huge or triggering, just a bit flat (mother/vixen/etc) 6y
Gezemice This looks interesting. I have seen a few others posting about it, too, and all seemed to like it. It is a subject I have never read about before but I know I would love to. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice Yes, it was one of the choices for the #Reading1001 group this month, so I‘m sure a few chose it to read. 6y

Finished up my audiobook tonight just as the @24in48 is beginning. So at 12:10, 1 book finished... talk about weird timing. Now off to sleep, I‘ll review and read more tomorrow. 😉

This novel explores the reasons a small group of Japanese tourists travel to India, as well as the reasons two Japanese live there. They explore their pasts as they visit the Ganges and learn about Hindu traditions. Interesting as to what different people learn and how they apply it to their own lives—from total devotion to none at all. #1001books #193/1305 #intranslation #reading1001 #192019 #1993

This book tells the stories and backstories of a group of Japanese tourists in India and centers around the river Ganges and the varying views of religion by the tourists and the peoples of India. It is an intriguing and enfolding novel with vivid depictions of disease, war, poverty, and the ways in which the characters are affected by what they see and experience. #reading1001

I am enjoying this book. It is an examination of the characters‘ inner motives for their respective trips to India. #litsypartyofone #reading1001

I‘ll be finishing up a couple of longish reads in the next few days. So clearly now is the time to start something shorter 😜 #1001books #reading1001

“He was the kind of man who was embarrassed to reveal his own feelings openly in words or on his face, the kind of husband who hoped to for a relationship in which his wife would understand him even if he did not utter a word.”

So far this a beautiful book. I am realizing how Japanese literature in particular is one of my favorites.

BarbaraBB I completely agree on Japanese literature! 6y
