A Perfect Union
A Perfect Union: Dolley Madison and the Creation of the American Nation | Catherine Allgor
1 post | 1 reading | 1 to read
An extraordinary American comes to life in this vivid, groundbreaking portrait of the early days of the republicand the birth of modern politics When the roar of the Revolution had finally died down, a new generation of American politicians was summoned to the Potomac to assemble the nation's newly minted capital. Into that unsteady atmosphere, which would soon enough erupt into another conflict with Britain in 1812, Dolley Madison arrived, alongside her husband, James. Within a few years, she had mastered both the social and political intricacies of the city, and by her death in 1849 was the most celebrated person in Washington. And yet, to most Americans, she's best known for saving a portrait from the burning White House, or as the namesake for a line of ice cream. Why did her contemporaries give so much adulation to a lady so little known today? In A Perfect Union, Catherine Allgor reveals that while Dolley's gender prevented her from openly playing politics, those very constraints of womanhood allowed her to construct an American democratic ruling style, and to achieve her husband's political goals. And the way that she did soby emphasizing cooperation over coercion, building bridges instead of bunkershas left us with not only an important story about our past but a model for a modern form of politics. Introducing a major new American historian, A Perfect Union is both an illuminating portrait of an unsung founder of our democracy, and a vivid account of a little-explored time in our history.

Running errands in the vicinity of the used bookstore and I *know* I‘m on a book-buying ban 🙈 but I couldn‘t help myself with their current price specials. $13 + tax for all these. Especially happy to find the tagged book!

And Infinite Jest is a #1001Books; if I never get to it, well I‘m only out a dollar 😂. And if you‘ve seen some of my recent posts, you know I‘m totally a nerd for picking up the “official” On the Road version.

rubyslippersreads This sounds really interesting. 4y
LauraBeth Anything under $20 doesn‘t count! 😺 4y
Sace @LauraBeth I'm making this my guiding philosophy from now on! 4y

ValerieAndBooks @rubyslippersreads I've been wanting to learn more about Dolley for a while, so was glad to finally come across something specifically on her. Will try to get to it soon and find out whether it's dry or not 😊 4y
ValerieAndBooks @LauraBeth you're such a enabler 😘 ! Right, @Sace?! I just need to try to catch up a bit on my ever-growing TBR 😅 😂 4y
Sace @ValerieAndBooks I'll never be caught up in mine 🙄 4y
Hooked_on_books Bold to grab IJ! I only got through it because of a buddy read, so if you‘re serious about reading it, that‘s what I recommend. It‘s a beast and I didn‘t particularly like it. 😜 4y
ValerieAndBooks @Hooked_on_books I remember there was an IJ buddy read here on Litsy — were you one of the participants? I honestly have no idea when I‘ll feel like tackling it but yes, doing it with others probably is a good idea 😂 4y
Hooked_on_books Yes, that‘s the buddy read I did! About 2.5 years ago, I think. It also helps to break the book down into sections and read on a schedule. I‘m usually not an advocate of that approach, but it really helped for this book. 4y
ValerieAndBooks @Hooked_on_books that long ago already? I should have jumped on the bandwagon then 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4y
