Blood River
Blood River: The Terrifying Journey Through The World's Most Dangerous Country | Tim Butcher
5 posts | 7 read | 6 to read
Published to rave reviews in the United Kingdom and named a Richard & Judy Book Club selectionthe only work of nonfiction on the 2008 listBlood River is the harrowing and audacious story of Tim Butchers journey in the Congo and his retracing of legendary explorer H. M. Stanleys famous 1874 expedition in which he mapped the Congo River. When Daily Telegraph correspondent Tim Butcher was sent to Africa in 2000 he quickly became obsessed with the legendary Congo River and the idea of recreating Stanleys journey along the three-thousand-mile waterway. Despite warnings that his plan was suicidal, Butcher set out for the Congos eastern border with just a backpack and a few thousand dollars hidden in his boots. Making his way in an assortment of vehicles, including a motorbike and a dugout canoe, helped along by a cast of characters from UN aid workers to a pygmy rights advocate, he followed in the footsteps of the great Victorian adventurer. An utterly absorbing narrative that chronicles Butchers forty-four-day journey along the Congo River, Blood River is an unforgettable story of exploration and survival.

Bank holiday reading. The beach seemed like a bad idea. The park, on the other hand, is looking nicely empty.

I don‘t think I‘ve ever googled so much stuff related to a book I‘m reading! I often pulled up a map of the Congo region, photos of referenced explorers and flora and fauna, and the definitions for many new-to-me words, including “pettifogging,” “opprobrium,” and “cataracts” as related to river water. I clearly know far too little about Africa! This was less an adventure story and more of a history, geography, and humanity story for me. 4⭐️

BarbaraBB I read this too recently and googled a lot too! 1y

Tim Butcher travels through the #DemocraticRepublicCongo (DRC). Torn by war, violence, poverty and injustice yet the Congo is mostly a country that the world seems to have forgotten about. I learned so much about politics, geography, human rights etc. Most notable is that the country is not an undeveloped country, rather an undeveloping country ⬇️

BarbaraBB All keeps deteriorating: in the 20th century it was for a while an ordinary African country where travel and trade existed; now there‘s hardly any infrastructure at all. (edited) 2y
KristiAhlers How very heartbreaking 2y

Cinfhen I‘ve read that‘s the case in many African countries in the last 15 years 😢 2y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen It‘s so sad. The jungle is taking over again in the Congo and people can‘t reach one another because there are no roads nor trains - bridges were blown up and never repaired etc. I 2y
Librarybelle Sounds like a very worthwhile read 2y

I‘m researching books for #readingafrica2022 next year and found this one for #Congo. I read King Leopold‘s Ghost last year, which was an excellent history. This will be a very different take on the region. I‘m putting it on my tbr list.

TrishB This one is also great for the Congo 2y
Librarybelle Thanks for posting! And thanks @TrishB for the suggestion! 2y

So... I‘ve decided to spend a few months reading books I own. Went through my massive piles. Starting to see a pattern 😂😂😂🤷🏽‍♂️Half are murder mysteries and half are about Africa. As you can see from the picture, I clearly have a plan!

arubabookwoman I‘ve read both Sunday by the Pool in Kigali and Tsotsi, and both are excellent. Tsotsi is a good movie too! 3y
Tove_Reads @arubabookwoman Indeed! So many good ones 🙂 3y
