WOW! You should read this! You can read it in 5 minutes, or you can spend an hour with it. Some of the quotes are ones you‘ll already know, but the art brings the speakers to life with amazing texture. Some of the quotes are obscure and will send you researching to learn more and more.

“Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.“

This quick read is filled with reflective and ageless quotes accompanied by beautiful artwork. Loved it!

This book features quotations by famous Balck people preceded by a short biography. This was a slim book and I enjoyed the bios and learned about some people I did not know about.

Bold, graphic portraits accompany a quote and brief bio of influential Black figures chosen and illustrated by Ron Wimberley. Quick read but enlightening (for me, at least).

I learned about Cathay William who enlisted in the army during the Civil War as William Cathay. She is the first African American woman to enlist and the only recorded woman to serve in the US Army while disguised as a man.

“I chose people based, not only upon historical precedence, but on their spirit and bravery...”

Bright, graphic illustrations of influential figures, a quote from them, and an accompanying brief bio. I wish there had been more women in his first set but I think he made up for it later on. While not in depth profiles, there is enough to get a sense of the person and spark curiosity and, possibly, further research.

Gorgeous portraits of influential black thinkers, artists, and activists with brief quotes and a slim background section for context. I would have preferred more robust background, but the art is gorgeous and the representation of over a century of black art, politics, and power is still worth checking out.

Today marks the first day of African American History Month. All month long we‘ll be celebrating with different post and articles to highlight the legacy of being Black in America. What started off as a week long celebration in 1926, has become a month long event held in February to honor Frederick Douglass‘s birth month.
On February 1st: The 13th Amendment was signed, The Greensboro sit-in began and over 200 demonstrators were jailed in Selma.

Merethebookgal My hometown is Greensboro! Not sure if this is still the case, but they had the Woolworth's counter from the sit-in on display at the Greensboro Historical Museum. It was really cool to see in-person. 7y
BookishFeminist @Merethebookgal It was there when I was in Greensboro I wanna say 5 years ago? It could've changed by then but would be a major disservice to take it off display! 7y
